Bulk Stores

I'd like to see stores that only sell in bulk, but take the concept a step further than the ones that currently exist.

There are some great stores popping up that are promoting buying in bulk and some stores that have a bulk section at a minimum. I'd like to create a business model that takes this a step further and works with vendors and distributors to reuse the containers that stock is provided in as an exchange. Empty containers for full ones. Moreless the way the milk was delivered in the past, but on a much broader scale.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

Many bulk bins and containers are stocked with items that come from the vendors and distributors in plastic of some sort. This business model will eliminate the need for the plastic packaging from the consumer level up to the wholesale level.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Case 1 & 2. Consumer and Wholesalers provide re-usable containers to the stores they are purchasing from and selling to.

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

This business model could work just about anywhere.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

Begin by working with existing stores that sell in bulk and their vendors to solicit feedback. Many stores won't want to have to hold onto the empty containers until the vendor comes to swap them out with new inventory, however since the businesses already have to store the back stock, the empty containers could simply sit where the back stock already is stored. It would be a new habit to teach, which will come with resistance, but with a bit of education and diligence this could work.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Research & Early Testing: You are exploring an idea, gathering inspiration and information needed to test it with real users.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

Being part of this could help push me further into developing this idea. Currently, I've just been mostly a quiet observer that's completely frustrated by the amount of plastic our world relies upon and this would help me to get loud about the crisis we're in.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

From stores centered around refilling items and buying in bulk and stores that have bulk departments.

Tell us about your work experience

I worked as the creative manager for a product design company for over 10 years and have always been an artist at heart that cares deeply for the environment who is committed to helping this situation

Please describe your legal and organizational structure

Not yet legally structured.

You ask, I will deliver. Now that I have made that grand claim, tell me what you mean by 'further'. Are you looking for more product selection? More out of box/bag solutions? Education? Product information? Wat do you see as further?

Thanks
Michael
