AIR-BOXIE : To fly plastic free with upgraded service

AIR-BOXIE is a new package design for the reused head phone on the plane, which have more benefit than the old style plastic packaging have.

If all the air-craft are going to use this design, tons of plastic waste will disappear in the world every day, passage can enjoy their plastic free flight too.

AIM

In order to fly plastic free, we need to redesign the packaging way of product that produced to the customer on the plane. Especially the item that will be collected by air attendant or will take away by customer after the flight, for instance, headphone or blanket. Those product usually packaged by plastic bag before the flight, as they need to let the customer know those item has fully cleaned before they use. So why don’t we try to package those item by other material that can replace plastic bag and reuse after the flight? Not only the change of packaging design can get products to people without generating plastic waste, but also improve the image of the brand of airplane.

Plastic recycling economy: Is the proposed solution able to eliminate non-recyclable small plastic waste?

Answer: Yes

Innovation: Is this idea new or unique?

Answer: Yes

People-oriented: Is this idea ready to make it easier for users to live?

Answer: Yes

Scalability: How does the idea accelerate and expand?

Answer: accelerate and expand by the image of the brand.

Regional Relevance: Does this idea solve local problems?

Answer: Yes

Direction

1. Reduce waste at source by packaging design.

2. Replace plastic by nature material.

3. Reuse.

4. Reduce the cost of recycling by packaging design.

Why there are minor plastic on the plane?

If reusing item are packaged individually, it may send a message to the user that the product is clean so the user may use the headphone comfortably. So usually the air carrier will choose to use minor plastic to pack the reused item individually as minor plastic are quite cheap and have low volumetric.

Why the new package design can replace minor plastic on the plane?

Materially Speaking, firstly, as washable Kraft paper is a kind of low-carbon environmental friendly materials that made by natural fiber pulp, it is biodegradable and recyclable and did not have any harmful substance. This is much better than plastic as it can biodegradation.

Secondly, this material is anti-wear and have high flexibility, the airline can recollect it and use it to repackage the headphone or blanket, so in a long term, there are less production cost than the plastic bag.

Thirdly, if we talk about the space, the airline choose to use plastic bag is because it can be housed into the pocket at back of the front seat after take the headphone out or the blanket out. This new package design can reduce its size and put into the pocket at back of the front seat. So it would not waste a lot of space while the customer sit on their seat or while they collected by air attendant.

Fourthly, the outlook of the new design is much better than the plastic bag. It can upgrade the image of the airline as they can provide a better service to the passenger by a new packaging grand design.

Therefore, there are no any reason why we still use minor plastic the repackaging the reusable item as they are difficult to recycle and the benefit of using plastic packaging can be replaced by the new design.

Hi RUBYMAKY This is awesome! Is there scope to increase the capacity of this concept to everything that is consumed on plane journeys? For example, reusable, cups, plates, and cutlery? And then have the entire box sent away for sanitation and reuse?

I try to limit my air travel due to the intense carbon footprint it creates but whenever I do find myself on a plane, the amount of single-use plastic that I am confronted with is immense! I would definitely use this service if it was available. It might even be worth incorporating a carbon offset program too possibly? It would be amazing if the sanitation process was both carbon and water neutral as well!

Thanks Daniel ! Thats a great idea and i will try it in the next stage. And that will make a real plastic free flight !

I am glad to hear that someone is interested in this project , this really inspiring and touched my heart . Im looking forward to let you try the plastic free flight experience in the near future. ( ´Ôû¢` )

Same as you , even i try to limit my travel to decrease carbon footprint , the minor plastic that we use on the plane just like a disaster . I will try to increase the capacity of this concept to everything that we use on the plane, or even the whole journey in the next stage :) Thanks again !!!
