Paper that is treated with a biodegradable nano tech coating will become a strong, hydrophobic and recyclable packaging material with numerous uses.

This could be revolutionary in replacing most small, single use plastic items.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

If this technology would be applied on paper, paper would become a usable alternative for most small single use plastic items. Because of the hydrophobic quality paper can be used where before it simply could not. This product would be recyclable as paper and the items that end up in the environment will biodegrade.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

This idea needs further development in collaboration with a manufacturer of biodegradable nano tech coatings. This could be a revolution in packaging I feel and many companies would embrace a economical and environmentally friendly alternatives.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Research & Early Testing: You are exploring an idea, gathering inspiration and information needed to test it with real users.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

This is a very fresh and undeveloped potentially good idea and solution for all the plastic that end up in the environment. The accelerator program would make it possible to develop the idea further and hopefully when successful make a big contribution to keep plastic in the economy and out the natural environment.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

I have recently been involved in a 'Transformation' project for young people (not in work or education, some with mental health issues) that aims is to get them back on track through performance and art projects. Over the last few weeks we made an art installation from recycled plastics 'sea where your plastic ends up'. Through the research for this project with the group I learn how big an issue there currently is with plastic wasted, found out about the competition and developed a few ideas.

Thanks Brenda for submitting this idea! It's awesome to hear that you bring a creative background in plastics to this challenge.

Are there any companies you are currently aware of that have a similar nano tech coating solution?

Excited to learn more about your idea!

Thanks Lauren. There is a biodegradable nano coating called GreenCoat ( that can be applied on any material.
There are others biodregradable nano coatings but i'm not sure if they are yet suitable for food & drink products. I need to look in to it a bit further and contact some producers ectc. I only thought of this idea a few days ago but it could be quite revolutionary if it works as well as i think it will and plastics could be widely replaced with paper substitutes.
There are many youtube video with examples of nano coatings not necessarily the biodegradeble type but you will get a sense of how amazing nano coatings are and their possiblities :-) Best regards, BB

I have contacted the companies behind GreenCaot.
Hopefully they will consider participation in this challenge and collaboration on further development of a revolutionary paper-based-nano-tech-coated packaging material ;-)

I have contacted the companies behind GreenCaot earlier this month and I am delighted that they have contributed in this challenge, see:

I wish them the very best :-) BB
