Idea Title

Yourstraw Bamboo Straws

Company / Organization Name

Your Straw

Website

Where are you / your team located?

Australia

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

We're replacing those awful plastic straws with the only truly ethical, carbon-neutral alternative - bamboo. Unlike the production processes of metal and glass straws ours are 100% hand-made. Zero electricity. Zero emissions. In fact, bamboo produces 35% more oxygen than trees so our production processes actually help to repair the environment. Plastic straws cause so much damage. Bamboo does so much good. Can't beat nature's smarts!

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Case #3. Both Anne & Lucas represent our target markets. Currently our stockists with restaurants/cafes sell straws in packs or as individual optional extras to guests. We do this in our own cafe/bar in Bali.

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

South East Asia and Australia/NZ

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

We're already selling in the Australian market, primarily wholesale to wholefoods, homewares & healthfoods stores, however we're unable to keep up with demand and we want to be able to reach further into the cafe?bar?restaurant industries. We plan to upscale our sales/marketing and production simultaneously, including planting more bamboo, building a weatherproof production house and improving the reach of our online store for international buyers.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Operating Concept / Startup: You have fulfilled the stages of testing, undertaken a full scale roll-out, and are currently operating this concept/idea as a business.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

- plant more bamboo - build a weatherproof production house for the drying/cutting phase - improve our capacity in e-commerce - supply more cafes/restaurants/bars We would consider our business successful once we are seeing widespread adoption by business-owners in the hospitality/event/catering industry. If we could replace 1,000,000 plastic straws in our second year of operation we would be happy. More than that would be even better.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

Personal Experience :( We should have been eating grilled fish dinner the day my husband pulled a plastic straw from a fish’s stomach… Needless to say that ruined our appetite. On that day I vowed to make a change. It was the last straw (pun clearly intended!). Bamboo is a safe, natural alternative that doesn’t endanger our marine life or pollute our environment. We love bamboo! https://yourstraw.com/pages/the-last-straw
