Quite simply, Touch are re-engineering the detachable lid so that it is now undetachable! Throughout our previous work within the FMCG drinks industry, we have gained technical, in-depth knowledge of the lifecycle of the drinks bottle & cap. Inspired by the insight that detachable lids are problematic during the after-life of drinks bottles, we are developing a solution that leverages existing screw-cap technology with a specifically designed TETHER. The TETHER holds the detachable lid to the bottle neck, therefore the lid cannot be removed from the bottle it is attached to. This eliminates the existing problem of bottle caps being separated and finding their way outside of the recycling system.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

By engineering the current detachable lids so that they are un-detatchable once they leave the factory, lids are no-longer separable – the entire format is therefore recycled intact, and therefore the value of the plastic used to produce them is retained.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Lucas knows that buying food OTG is a convenience that comes at the cost of many individual pieces of packaging. TETHER means that Lucas' drinks packaging throughout the day is fully suited to the recycling infrastructure, with no further effort needed. TETHER means Nigel would no longer need to collect discarded drinks caps which are too small for recycling. Similarly, in 3rd world, Saatwika would be incentivised to collect plastic bottles due to the additional plastic value of the TETHER cap.

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

We have developed this solution in response to the vast & increasing single-use liquid consumption across multiple categories - across the globe.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

After developing a successful PoP prototype that would require concept development & investment, we would identify potential bottle & cap manufacturing partners to work with us to develop the format for wide scale manufacture & use. We would then pilot this with a partner brand. We have worked with global clients across the FMCG drinks industry – many of whom are expressing interest in a rollout partnership. The manufacture could scaled up across multiple OTG drinks manufacturers after pilot.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Piloting: You have started to implement your solution as a whole with a first set of real users. You may have started to develop a business model for your idea, including identifying key customer segments, relevant partnerships, go-to-market strategy, and draft financials.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

We envision working with the EMF to help link our specialist creative and technical product and packaging innovation expertise with expert EMF partners to develop the concept through to prototype. The opportunity and benefits that comes with working with EMF, would fundamentally be the combined expertise and influence of industry leaders & associates which would allow us to raise awareness, interest & gather momentum around the idea - within High-street coffee chains then food service industry.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

During an internal brainstorm around the challenges of recycling packaging, conversation kept returning to the problem of separating packaging components. Whilst new and sustainable materials are being developed, how can we leverage current packaging formats yet eliminate the issue of bottle cap separation? The team’s solution was the simplest: re-engineer the lid so that it is undetachable.

In the last 2 years our work for clients such us Lucozade Ribena Suntory, Nestle Waters, Highland Spring and Carlsberg Group has led to major innovation in bottle and beverage packaging.
