A spinnable fixed lid that is easy to turn like a normal lid but that stays on the bottle and can be recycled with the bottle.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

The fixed lid will prevent millions of lids from getting lost and end up as plastic waste. When the lid is fixed the lid will stay on the bottle and can be recycled. Because the lid spins round there is no restriction in turning the cap and putting the lid on and off the bottle.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

any bottle with screw cap globally

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

This type of lid could be the new standard for the current lids. The application would be quite similar when the cap is turned on a bottle in a factory. The production of the actual cap would require different moulds and tooling but when that is up and running the cost would probably only be fractionally higher because it will use a little more material per lid. If this idea get further developed and tested I would hope to collaborate with a big packaging or drinks producer for a trial period.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Research & Early Testing: You are exploring an idea, gathering inspiration and information needed to test it with real users.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

This is a very fresh and undeveloped potentially good idea and solution for all the bottle caps that end up in the environment. The accelerator program would make it possible to develop the idea further and hopefully when successful make a big contribution to keep plastic in the economy and out the natural environment.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

I have recently been involved in a 'Transformation' project for young people (not in work or education, some with mental health issues) that aims is to get them back on track through performance and art projects. Over the last few weeks we made an art installation from recycled plastics 'sea where your plastic ends up'. Through the research for this project with the group I learn how big an issue there currently is with plastic wasted, found out about the competition and developed a few ideas.

Tell us about your work experience

I am a model designer for advertising, TV, film, theatre and exhibits. I design and make models using many different materials and processes. I love plastics, moulding and casting.

Please describe your legal and organizational structure

HI Brenda!

There are 7 days left in the refinement phase.

If there is key information in the comments on your idea submission, I recommend that you move them to the main body of your idea submission before the cut-off time.

I just want to remind you that the deadline to complete the Refinement Questions via the online submission form is August 31 at 11:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

Hi Brenda!

Welcome to refinement!

How much extra material would be needed for the spinnable lid? How could this be customised for different brands? How would you persuade brands to adopt this?

I look forward to seeing a physical prototype and some testing.

There are a few ideas that you might want to check out for inspiration:

https://challenges.openideo.com/challenge/circular-design/refinement/icecap - InLid - an idea in refinement in this challenge - has a really good example of using video to demonstrate rapid prototyping and getting feedback from the users

Friendly ATM - https://challenges.openideo.com/challenge/financial-longevity/top-ideas/all-generation-friendly-atm - a top idea from our financial longevity challenge has a great example of rapid, low budget prototyping and gathering feedback from customers. The use of video to demonstrate the prototyping/testing session is really good.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me by tagging me here (@ followed by my name) or send me an email - krushton@ideo.com

Hello Brenda check out this http://etsy.me/2wLCFI6
the system is used for reusable bottle, I guess it's because it costs more money to manufacture and better suits reusable bottles that can be sold by themselves and absorb the cap's price.
You'r biggest challenge will probably be: HMW make this solution affordable for the bottle industry?

Hi Brenda,

It is great to have you in the challenge. We have had a few ideas based around the attached lid that are all slightly different.

Have you seen them?

Barbara - Stay on cap - Save a life cap archana chowdary - Attached bottle caps Michael Maguire - ThisCap
Flocap - Open and drink without removing the cap
The Bottle to Bottle Cap by Julian Coymat

I think it might be interesting to compare and contrast them at some point.

Something I'm learning about is the difference in plastics used for the cap vs the bottle. My current thought process is leading me down a bottle with integrated cap system, similar to the Cuppuccino - Temporary reusable coffee cup with integrated lid and sleeve. [Idea Stage] concept. It would mean a change to the bottling process, but hopefully one that makes a significant beneficial impact on the ROI that bottling plants will look to adopt it.

Thank you Matt. I think your design for the bottle cap that stays on is really good and if it is long enough to come off top of the bottle when using the bottle I could see that work very well.
In terms of difference in terms of different types of plastic and their recycling I dont think its a problem at all. Currently the ring of a traditional cap remains on the bottle too and is at some stage somehow been taken off in the recycling plant. Similar would need to happen to bottles in the fixed style caps that we are proposing. Best regards, BB
