During travelling carrying personalized toiletries is always a problem. Either carry plastic sachets or 100 ml small plastic bottles which again causes problem on disposal.
Our idea is to design a universal reusable travel utility kit which can hold almost all of our personalized toiletries with the ease of filling, keeping it leak proof and carrying.
The kit will comprise of an outer container with modular toiletries unit stacked inside it, like as in Bensia pencil. The container will have a membrane at the inlet and outlet thru which we can fill , store and dispose  liquid  of any consistency with no spills. Its perfectly leak proof.
All the modular units are designed to be stacked one above the other within the container which can be mounted anywhere in our washrooms, with the help of suction cup at behind.
Its usage can be as simple as the sequence in which we perform our morning task.Like use paste first and then put the used  paste unit on the top and push it inside so as the next activity unit -the shower gel comes in place.
While we reach at the end of our activity the container sequence is ready for the next user. It will be compact kit with individual 100 ml toiletries so that one can even carry it in the cabin baggage.
Just fill it using your family pack toileteries and you are ready to go.

Where are you / your team located?

We are from India, specifically from Delhi NCR.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

This idea eliminates the use of small format plastic sachets which we tend to carry during our travel and thus helps in reducing the waste in an effective and sustainable way.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Case I

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

Our idea can be implemented all around the globe, ranging from personal travel companion to small formal plastic bottles available in some hotel rooms.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

We are planning to first introduce the idea as personal travel utility kit and the in next stage we will approach hotels to try and implement it to eliminate small toiletries bottle which they provide to guests. We can make aware of the new experience by providing a hand out along with each container and make them aware how accepting this small change can be significant contribution of theirs in saving our planet.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Research & Early Testing: You are exploring an idea, gathering inspiration and information needed to test it with real users.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

Becoming Top Idea will definitely instill confidence & faith in our ideas and give us leverage while approaching investors for the project. Moreover being a startup design firm with primary focus on sustainable design, the New Plastics Economy Accelerator program will surely give us the necessary boost for further advancement in the field of sustainability.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

We got our design analogy from the famous Bencia pencil where the used lead is replaced by the subsequent lead and so on.

Tell us about your work experience

We are predominantly a team of three from design background. Our experience includes extensive industry exposure of 10+ years and vast and notable experience in design academics .

Please describe your legal and organizational structure

Please describe, in detail, your business model and how you intend to test and iterate this model.

For this idea, we want to develop a functional product and first do a pilot run with a hotel chain by introducing our product as a sachet/ small plastic toiletry bottles substitute for the guests. On feedback from the pilot run, we refine the product more & approach toiletry brands operating in India to collaborate for this product sales & introduction of dispensers for refilling at various retail outlets for a sustainable cause.

Please explain how your innovation will work within, potentially improve, and provide benefit to the plastics system.

Using present day plastic manufacturing techniques we are devising ways to eliminate sachets & encourage reuse of durable plastics & also after the end of lifecycle for this product the different types of plastics in it can easily be separable and collectable for recycling. The components are of certain volume and weight which will allow collection of it possible when discarded from use.

Please describe, in depth, how your solution will reduce the overall environmental footprint of packaging.

Our product uses PP & PET material which are fit for almost 1000 cycles of reuse operation atleast if not more. After end of use cycle the different types of plastic in it can be easily separable & collectable as volume & weight is significant for collection and can easily be recycled. Hence this can be a great step to do away with toiletry sachets and reduce plastic waste.

Please outline how your design, material, and delivery choices will influence price, and how you intend to address the price increase that may result from this solution.

Our choice of materials and intended manufacturing process are simple for this product hence keeping in mind the 1000 reuse cycles of this product, the cost to consumers will not be very high- product costing approximately will be 150 times the cost of 1 sachet and refilling cost will be half the cost of 1 sachet.. so effectively the costing will not impact much on consumers.

Please explain how your solution will impact user behavior, and what design considerations you've included to ensure easy and intuitive interactions with your Idea.

Yes a certain user behaviour change is required for this drive but in our product convenience of use and carrying during travel is a very major plus point. For refilling some initial hickups will be there for consumers but with the sustainability banner and if possible Govt. encouragement the habit can well be induced in consumers. Just that proper refilling dispenser system in prominent retail stores is a must to compliment the success of our product.

Please describe how you intend to use the prize funding, if selected as a Top Idea. Be specific.

Firstly we would use the money to prepare working prototypes with actually intended materials for the product- invest in CAD +proto tooling and secondly use it for promotional pilot surveys and test runs with hotel chains.

Hi Karman Studios

As Refinement Phase quickly comes to a close in LESS THAN 8 HOURS, I want to remind you that the following must be submitted by tonight, August 31st at 11:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

1. Submit the Refinement Questions Form online that was sent again via email yesterday evening--we have not yet received this from you. These questions are mandatory for Top Ideas consideration, so this should be your first priority in the final stretch.

2. A secondary priority, which is optional, is to update your Refinement Phase post.

Looking forward to reviewing and celebrating the amazing work you've achieved this Refinement Phase!
