Where are you / your team located?

We are located on the west coast of the United States. Las Vegas and Long Beach California.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

We are passionate about eliminating any single use plastic bottles, cans, and tetra packs that are used for pasturized coconut water. We made the coconut resealable so people can drink right from the source in natures packaging. It's clean safe and pure and the CocoTaps are fully reusable. Our CocoTaps are also made BPA Free and witha proprietary blend of materials that by chance if someone throws them away by mistake they are biodegradable in less than 5 years instead of 700 years in a landfill

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Our idea applies to use Case 1. Our patented reusable CocoTaps and caps invention made the coconut resealable. This eliminates the wasteful processing and single use plastic packages and pouches that coconut water currently comes in. It also eliminates the pasteurization and artificial ingredients that also create more waste and pollution. Healthier people and a healthier planet without single use plastics is our CocoDream. In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

We have started the implementation on the West Coast currently serving fresh Tapped Branded coconuts in over 19 resorts in Las Vegas, Reno, and Laughlin Nevada. We started with resorts but see major applications for our systems all over the world.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

We are proving our invention in the resort and vacation destination vertical currently and see this scaling into many other verticals across North America and beyond. We see some potential obstacles being tied to not enough resources to scale quickly enough. We also see a challenge potentially with giant competitors like Coke and Pepsi that rely on packed products and they may see us as a threat and disruption to their status quo. By simply having the honest conversation we can raise awareness.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Piloting: You have started to implement your solution as a whole with a first set of real users. You may have started to develop a business model for your idea, including identifying key customer segments, relevant partnerships, go-to-market strategy, and draft financials.
  • Full-scale roll-out: You have developed a pilot, tested, and analyzed the impact of that pilot as it pertains to the problem scope. You are ready to expand the pilot significantly and begin to scale.
  • Operating Concept / Startup: You have fulfilled the stages of testing, undertaken a full scale roll-out, and are currently operating this concept/idea as a business.

Winning this award would help us scale even faster as well as attract more qualified team members. We are super excited to be considered because this is our passion and we have all devoted our time Coco Love and energy to making sure the ocean is free from plastics and that we can raise the awareness on Zero Waste habits and products one coconut at a time. More sales and more marketing will help us spread our products to resorts all over the world and cut the carbon footprint on coconut water.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

I was never a fan of the taste and waste coconut water produced. One day after trying fresh coconut water right from the coconut and how hard it was to open I knew there had to be a better way. After breaking an expensive knife I created the Cocotaps tool kit. It's now the only 100% made in USA coconut water system that allows you to quickly and safely tap a coconut. Drinking from natures packaging is the freshest and most environmentally way to drink coconut water. Eliminating excess packaging.

Tell us about your work experience

I have been an inventor and problem solver for most of my life. After founding and funding numerous ventures over the years I discovered that the environment and health and wellness is my passion.

We are a Nevada LLC

Please describe, in detail, your business model and how you intend to test and iterate this model.

CocoTaps technology and Tapping systems have numerous verticals and applications. Our first model we have been proving creates profits, saves time, labor and marketing dollars for resorts, theme parks, and cruise ships. Currently serving mega resorts in Las Vegas Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, MGM, Cosmopolitan and many more are only a few of our customers that serve fresh tapped coconuts. We require more resources for trucks, marketing, and more manufacturing of our taps, tools, and team members.

Please explain how your innovation will work within, potentially improve, and provide benefit to the plastics system.

Our invention literally cuts the carbon footprint on coconut water by using natures packaging eliminating pasteurization and creates the freshest coconut water right from the source. Our system is fully circular in its design to be reusable, biodegradable, and profitable for the users by saving time and precious resources. With only a small percentage of plastics being recycled we are excited to eliminate bottles, cans, and terrapacks that are used for Coconut water currently with our CocoTaps.

Please describe, in depth, how your solution will reduce the overall environmental footprint of packaging.

We are going the extra mile to make sure we raise the awareness on single use plastics and making sure our CocoTaps are reused and kept in circulation. We have created a tap back rewards system that will allow our customers to reuse or return the taps back to us once they are finished drinking from the coconut. We also have identified other uses for repurposing the coconut after the tapped coconut has been used. The photo above shows how we plan to repurpose the empty coconuts after use.

Please outline how your design, material, and delivery choices will influence price, and how you intend to address the price increase that may result from this solution.

CocoTaps has truly created the freshest way to drink coconut water eliminate plastic bottles and packaging and preserve freshness in a safe and easy on the go fashion. Currently we are creating and proving massive value for high end resorts. They purchase our branded tapped coconuts for $5 and sell them from $10-$30 per coconut on the Las Vegas strip. We have provided a way to increase brand awareness and have given them a fully green solution that every resort is challenged with.

Please explain how your solution will impact user behavior, and what design considerations you've included to ensure easy and intuitive interactions with your Idea. 

People are so used to drinking from plastic bottles and cans that once they see the tapped branded coconuts they immediately think of how much better this is for the environment. People instinctively want the freshest and most healthy ingriedients. With Cocotaps Tapped Coconuts they automatically feel connected and as we like to call it being "Tapped In" and connected to health and wellnes of the environment and personal development wise.

Please describe how you intend to use the prize funding, if selected as a Top Idea. Be specific.

The funds would be used to continue to grow our team and grow our customer base to raise the awareness as well as fully immplement our Tap Back Rewards programs in order to create a full closed loop and ensure that we reuse every tap that's sold.
