Making reusable water bottles convenient

Water2Go is an adhesive sensor that you attach to your reusable bottle that allows you to fill up your water bottle at conveniently located Water2Go stations. By signing up for an account with the service, users could easily have access to water wherever a Water2Go station existed. They would be paying a subscription to compensate for the water they use. When retrieving water at machines, the adhesive RFID sensor will let the machine know who's refilling water. There wouldn't be any payment involved at the machine itself, as the main focus is to reduce friction between using reusable bottles. It also eliminates the problem of owning personal water filters that can only be used at home by offering filtered water at various locations.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

By encouraging the use of reusable bottles, people will opt for the convenience of being able to fill up at various locations. The goal is to reduce, if not eliminate, the need for numerous water bottles.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Trevor & Benjamin. There wouldn't be a need to ring around bottles of water if dispensers were easy available with reusable bottles. We also looked at a more local case/persona where a user found bottles were preferable to a reusable option, not because of price but because of convenience.

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

This idea plan would be used most often to solve problems in an urban environment. In Los Angeles, tap water isn't the most safe option, and many Angelinos would rather have a filtered option.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

There's two main sides of supply that this idea would need to cover: the water machines and the adhesive sensors. For the water machines, working with local businesses and the city of LA would be the most effective way to scale, so new plumbing infrastructure would not have to be built. This would probably be the biggest obstacles. For the sensors, scaling is a matter of producing more and delivering to more locations.

Being able to have a high-fidelity prototype of the actual machine and sensor would definitely help us test how viable this could be if implemented on scale, which is something the NPEAP could help us with. The accelerator could also enable us to expand user testing to see how open residents would be to this idea.

I love the idea of refill stations coupled with the concept of a more "connected" device in the form of a sensor — I've seen a number of concepts that we're in this vein and it's exciting to see that people like you are thinking about "community" stations — nice work!

you will have to place these water2go machines in places where purified water or muncipal water is not available like in certain tourist destinations. But how will you refill the water2go machines where purified water is not available?

Well the idea is that by having the water supply taken care of (by building on top of existing water infrastructure) keeping systems running would involve just replacing industrial-level filters. Of course, we're assuming that implementing this type of process would work under a reasonable budget. If there isn't a water supply to tap into, I think that problem should be addressed first, before making drinking water a priority.

Hi Justin, this is a very interesting idea. I was generally brainstorming with my friend and landed on the same idea a few months back, however, there are few challenges in India at least as there is no access to municipal clean water everywhere. So we had to rely on the packaged drinking water at the refill stations, which is not economically viable.

Ah, true. The overhead on this idea is pretty steep, and a scalable implementation does indeed assume that water is reasonably available. We were thinking downtown Los Angeles or Santa Monica would be a good place to start, if this idea was brought to fruition. I hope the water challenges in India can be resolved so ideas like Water2Go could be implemented over there. Thanks for the the response Manoj!
