This is a biodegradable plastic made from seaweed invented by 3 Japanese designer - AGAR plasticity by AMAM -

This product could potentially replace many single use plastic items like coffee cup lids and stiring sticks.

I will contact the designers to make them aware of this competition and hope they will enter.

Natural plastic from the sea to keep chemical plastic out of the sea!

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

This material is biodegradable so any items that would get into the environment would degrade.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

global

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

I am not the designer of the material. I will make the designers aware of the competition and I do hope that they will enter to further develop this product.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Research & Early Testing: You are exploring an idea, gathering inspiration and information needed to test it with real users.
  • Prototyping: You have conducted some small tests or experiments with prospective users and will continue developing idea through these tests.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

I have recently been involved in a 'Transformation' project for young people (not in work or education, some with mental health issues) that aims is to get them back on track through performance and art projects. Over the last few weeks we made an art installation from recycled plastics 'sea where your plastic ends up'. Through the research for this project with the group I learn how big an issue there currently is with plastic wasted, found out about the competition and developed a few ideas.

Tell us about your work experience

I am a model designer for advertising, TV, film, theatre and exhibits. I design and make models using many different materials and processes. I love plastics, moulding, casting and solving problems.

Clever and beautiful when lit. Could be potentially used in some interesting shelf displays.

Brenda great to see you again in the challenge! Thank you for highlighting this idea, and innovative plastics alternative. If you have connections with their design team, we would love it if you would reach out and encourage them to enter! We would be super excited to hear more about their material, and how some of our other ideas in the challenge may be able to collaborate.

Thank you Lauren. I think its potentially a great product!
I have send them an email but I have not yet got a reply. I'll try again after the weekend.
This is a link to their website: www.a-ma-m.com/work-1
I do hope they will enter the challenge ;-)
