Who is your idea designed for and how does it better support family caregivers as they care for a loved one with dementia?

This idea is designed to help caregivers understand the progress of the disease. From the insights generated by the app, they can understand when older adults need an extra help. For example, from the data gathered, if the user isn't sleeping well and is skipping meals the app will generate an insight and alert the family that the user may be feeling depressed. These insights can also track the progress of the disease by reporting how frequently the user's routine changes.

inSight is a mobile app that allows users to monitor remotely the health and behavior of loved ones with Dementia in a simple and more powerful way than the current market can provide. A smart bracelet connected to inSight can keep track of things like heartbeat, sleep, and activity; allows for messaging between parties and is updated in real time. But in addition to the basic functionality, inSight uses machine learning to gather data about the user's daily routine and generate insights about important changes that may affect their health.

What skills, input, or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

I'd like to learn more about the technology requirements and opportunities. Which data should be collected in order to identify the progress of dementia and which insights can we generate from this data. I'd also like to learn what is the best way test this idea, how it should be tested in order to guarantee the success of this app.

How long has your idea existed?

  • 4 months - 1 year

This idea emerged from

  • A group brainstorm

Tell us about your work experience:

I have a background in graphic and motion graphic design. I'm currently pursuing my master in Human-Computer Interaction and did a summer internship in UX/UI Design.

Hi Carolina!

It is great to have you in the challenge.

I noticed this in your submission:

'I'd like to learn more about the technology requirements and opportunities. Who might know the answers? What type of person?

What would differentiate this solution from other monitoring apps/wearables? What would the caregiver do with the information given to them? How would you inspire them to take appropriate action?

Hi Kate,

The idea is to not only collect data but to generate insights using this data. With this data, the app can recognize new symptoms or recognize when the symptoms are getting worse and alert the caregiver.

A geriatrician or neurologist would maybe be the best person to advise on what data should be collected and what insights we could generate from it.
