Who is your idea designed for and how does it better support family caregivers as they care for a loved one with dementia?

My idea is designed for family members, loved ones and friends who are looking for answers while giving care to their loved ones who suffer from dementia and/or Alzheimer's disease. The chat bot mimics conversations between a "help line" with caregivers, using artificial intelligence. The user centric and always accessible bot helps with solving issues and problems around dementia by involving the user in a conversation.

People tend to feel left alone when facing challenges and are seeking for advice and help instantly. The Forgetmenot Bot is the assistant that gives answers and advice to caregivers 24/7, on the device that is always with them - the smart phone.

Why a bot rather than an app? Because it combines several use cases.

“~90% of our time on mobile is spent on email and messaging platforms. I would love to back teams that build stuff for places where the consumers hang out!” — Niko Bonatsos, Managing Director at General Catalyst

Rather than using a self help website for Alzheimer's patients or calling a help line on their phone, users can simply message the Forgetmenot Bot and ask for a solution to a specific question while tapping into crowd knowledge and experiences with like minded people all around the world.

The Forgetmenot Bot is always with you and does not leave you alone. Imagine being able to talk to someone who combines all relevant information around Alzheimer's or dementia on a personal phone line without any wait time.

The artificial intelligence of the Forgetmenot Bot is based on professional knowledge of institutions and researchers and constantly learns from a community of users.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

We introduce the Forgetmenot Bot to familiy members and loved ones of dementia inhabitnats/patients of a elderly home.

What skills, input, or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

The OpenIDEO community could help with - connecting institutions, companies, researchers and doctors in order to form a group of professional stakeholders to build the foundation knowledge base for the artificial intelligence - creating the user experience based on semantic knowledge tailored to the needs of the affected - finding test environments within the community

From a UI standpoint, this seems like a fairly simple execution. It seems like the backend would potentially be quite the undertaking? What business models have you considered to sustain Forgetmenot Bot?

Photo of Alexandra Quadt

Hi Lindsay, there are several business models to be considered in the research and planning phase. They could be stand-alone, or work together
1. Subscription for users (a small monthly subscription fee for the service)
2. Affiliate programs with services catering to the needs of the patients as well as the caregivers
3. Funding by board of specialists in the field, such as research and clinical institutions

Hi Alexandre!

It is great to have you in the challenge.

Are you able to produce an MVP/prototype of this product? When and how will the handover from bot to professional healthcare professional take place?

I am just going to link you to a few bot ideas in this challenge and another challenge that might give you a few ideas on the next steps Hello Caregiver - Your helper in Alzheimer's and dementia care and Abdo Moussa idea

Hi Kate,

thanks for your reply! I would be able to build an MVP with my team given we get some funding. I would aim at collaborating with companies within my network who have already built some pretty amazing bot tech such as
I believe the most work would go into building the initial data base with researchers, scientists and professional caregivers in order to compile the intelligence behind it. I would love to also involve the OpenIDEO community into making this process interesting and fruitful.
Thanks for linking me to Abdo Moussa and making me aware of these other amazing ideas!
