Who is your idea designed for and how does it better support family caregivers as they care for a loved one with dementia?

The Guide is for Professional and Family Caregivers and those living with memory loss. This bi-lingual (spanish and english) tool is filled with short creative video lessons that guide caregivers through hands-on art experiences, from music to paintings and printmaking to poetry and movement with their loved ones.

Creative Caregiving Guide

"After seeing the ‘guide’ in action I realize that for the first time I have something meaningful that I can bring to my time with my mom. I don't have to be afraid to be with her, I have something meaningful we can do together." - Caregiver, Florida

A self-paced creative platform that gives the caregiver access to dozens of activities that were designed by professional teaching artists. Participatory these lessons can be done with someone in the early to later stages of memory loss.

Ranging from one minute to 30 these activities help the caregiver reconnect with their loved  one in a new and exciting way.

Over the past two decades, evidence-based research has continued to support the efficacy and impact of creative arts and humanities interventions on older adults who are living with memory loss. Demonstrated results include improved health, higher quality of care, and enhanced quality of life across the spectrum of aging. These creative interventions have proven effective for enhanced quality of life for aging adults and their caregivers, while reducing healthcare costs, mitigating long-term depression and anxiety related to chronic conditions, and strengthening networks of care. These interventions contribute to experiences of quality living for both caregivers and their partners. A significant challenge has been, and continues to be, providing access to best-practice creative arts interventions for caregivers and their loves ones.

  • Effective for aging adults AND their caregivers by mitigating long-term depression and anxiety related to chronic conditions, and enhancing quality of life
  • Reducing social and healthcare costs, enhancing professional provider resilience, and strengthening networks of care

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Prototype and test an app version of the Guide.

What skills, input, or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

- Do you think we should attach other services/sponsors to the Guide that would support the caregiver (such as referrals to transportation, grocery shopping deals, etc...)? - Would like to hear others experience in moving a web-based platform to an app. What do they wish they had known ahead of time? - Can this tool be attached to other ideas on the IDEO platform that support caregivers? (To create more of a wrap-around service?) - Would like more feedback on the cultural components of arts
