Many companies, especially those public traded and listed on stock exchanges, care a lot about 'shareholder value'. This leads to them doing much that investors like to see. For investors interested in sustainability, there are these indexes.
Dow Jones maintains indexes in several sectors that contain companies that perform according to sustainability guidelines. For investors that want to put their money in 'good companies', this list is an investment guide informing which shares to buy. For companies, becoming part of such an index can be very interesting, because it makes their shares more interesting, and thus more valuable.

What these indexes show, I think, is that there is a growing interest of investors in creating shared value or doing sustainable business. And that is a good motivator for publicly traded companies to do so.
I look forward to hearing from fellow OpenIDEATORS what their thoughts are on this subject.
