Saving Our Common Ground

A NGO-run website featuring a worldwide-recognizable symbol which would act as a reward scheme for companies who choose to make monetary or in-kind donations to sustainable world benefit causes.

We would create an NGO with a recognizable symbol worldwide. This NGO would be responsible for three major hubs of motivation: 1) A website featuring a real-time leaderboard of money-saving methods and donations to promote healthy competition between businesses and to encourage customers to do business with these companies. 2) A giving chain that rewards businesses that donate to sustainable world benefit causes with monetary or in-kind donations from businesses and organizations that want to support this type of activity. 3) An advertising structure that rewards high-donation and high-innovation businesses with premium adspace for little to no cost.

How does your concept celebrate, identify or inspire for-profit businesses that act as agents of world benefit?

We will allow for-profit businesses that act as agents of world benefit to use the "Happy Earth Symbol" on their products to make them easily recognizable to customers. We will also modify the companies' logos with a specific color which will relate to whichever cause they helped with( eg. red for donating to AIDS research, pink for help with breast cancer). This symbol would make these companies more recognizable and allow for customers to factor in their donations and work as agents of world benefit while making their purchases.

How will your concept help us create or leverage stories of world benefit that are sticky and shareable?

In the main website, each business will be represented by a tree on a 3D model of the earth based on their geographic location (zoom will be possible!). Clicking on the tree will bring up the story of the business, including figures in dollars and percent of revenue, which will give information regarding sustainable activities, donations to world benefit organizations, and any other relevant information the company would like to provide. Users can give comments and karma to their favorite stories and can discuss in a public forum. We will also incorporate a blog to talk about the newest technologies and ideas in process.

What will it take to scale your concept so that its reach is global and widespread?

We will use a structured advertisement scheme to make the symbol famous and easily recognizable. We would bring in sports teams such as famous football, soccer or cricket teams to wear this symbol on their jerseys. We could even add the logos of the partner companies onto the jerseys so that people know who is acting as an agent of world benefit. We could even use "cloud advertising" (both in the digital and real-life clouds!) to make this symbol famous.

Great thinking, team! Something we're eager to encourage everyone to think about is how we can inspire, enable and celebrate for-profit businesses to go beyond charitable add-ons (donations, volunteer time, etc) and actually innovate for world benefit through their core business offerings. Think Zipcar, where sustainable value is built into the core offering vs. a car company that has a donation model which goes to an environmental cause. That could be through developing new products or services that not only help the company compete in the marketplace *and also* offer some sort of benefit to the environment or society as well. We'd love to see how you and our community might build out your concept with this kind of thinking in mind. Digging your notion around the size of the trees relating to the amount of world benefit being created. I wonder if there's another way to measure the benefit besides money spent? Looking forward to thoughts from your team and others in our community.

We were also thinking that the size of the trees could be linked to a voting system where the contributors put their ideas for sustainability that they have implemented into their company profile and have the public vote on it.
