Grassroots movements are known to be effectual at a local level. Let’s start our award for sustainable business within communities. Cities across the globe will have local businesses, student organizations, etc. submit their implementations of sustainable business practices to a local jury of experts. Presentations around the world would occur simultaneously within the cities over four days in a festival type setting with concerts, promotions of green practices, etc. In addition to these local competitions, national competitions for larger businesses will occur. The winners of the local competitions would go on to compete against each other at their own national level competition.

How does your concept celebrate, identify or inspire for-profit businesses that act as agents of world benefit?

There would be different categories for different types of companies. Each participating company would be judged by a jury as well as online voting (for the initial phase). Once these companies are identified they would have a chance to represent their city, state or nation in the next level of the competition. People would that start rooting for companies from their respective regions, the model would be similar to a sport championship. The final winner would benefit not only by receiving the cash prize but also publicity received in the process. The winner would automatically gain recognition and given the incentives even the for-profit businesses would want to participate in this competition.

How will your concept help us create or leverage stories of world benefit that are sticky and shareable?

The entire competition is planned to be conducted in a festival typesetting. There will always be ideas that would stand out from the rest. These ideas would work as inspiration for the following years. The festival type setting would make this event even more widespread and regular. The event would be an open for all with a nominal entry fee. This festival would provide people a platform to share and promote their ideas of innovation for world benefit.

What will it take to scale your concept so that its reach is global and widespread?

The competition would begin at the local level but eventually snowball into a global mega event. As the national winners would then get a chance to go for the international level, this would give them a chance to represent their country. You would have companies and ideas from each country and each would have a fan base from their respective country. There would be global awareness as this would be an international event. Its reach would be widespread as it has stemmed from local competitions.

Great thinking around surfacing global ventures, Mehul. And I wonder if guidelines for each local chapter could be devised (like TEDx does) which would seek consistency across the initiative while supporting local diversity.

Thanks for your comments Meena. Uniformity of guidelines at local level and across various levels would be critical for implementing this concept. Given that the ultimate aim is to conduct it locally across various countries, a standard system would be required.
