Describe what you intend to do and how you'll do it in one sentence (required 250 Characters)

totoMum aim to use sms based technology to educate mothers and NOK, send clinic reminders and also to help track the defaulters. Currently we are partnering with a CBO called KICOBO and the Turkana County Health department

Explain the idea (less than 2,000 characters)

The 1,000 days between a woman’s pregnancy and her child’s 2nd birthday offer a critical window of opportunity to promote healthier and more prosperous futures. Expectant mothers in low-income and middle-income countries often lack access to vital information about pregnancy, preparation for birth and best practices when caring for their newborn. On the other hand adoption of technology in health department in these countries has been low. Innovative solutions are needed to bridge this knowledge gap among mothers and improve maternal and neonatal health in these settings using technology. Continuous technological advancements in healthcare have saved countless lives and improved the quality of life or even more. ‘totoMum’ is a mHealth application with an enabled interactive SMS messaging service that send reminders to pregnant women on scheduled clinic visits and information on nutrition and health. The platform provides pregnant women with an interactive mechanism to feed back on the service they have received or ask questions to seek clarity on issues affecting their health. totoMum also sends some SMS to the next of kin (father) which encourage them to get involved in child care as well as providing support to their spouses during pregnancy.

Which part(s) of the world does this idea target?

  • Eastern Africa

Geographic Focus (less than 250 Characters)

totoMum innovation is currently being tested in Kenya, Turkana County with the target being to roll out the idea to the whole country(Kenya) and in future to other countries in Africa

Who are your end users and how well do you know them? (750 characters)

totoMum was developed by TotoOnline Company but partnered with a local CBO in Turkana County to implement the idea, the reason behind this is to enable us reach even the mothers in very remote areas where language is a problem, with help of KICOBO we are able to send SMS in local language(Turkana). We are also working closely community health volunteers (CHVs) and the county government to enable us reach many. With totoMum innovation we hope to see increased adherence to preventive services and thus reduced mortality rate

How is the idea unique? (750 Characters)

totoMum is a very unique idea, with other available initiatives, they only send educative and reminder sms to mothers but with totoMum we have also incorporated the Next of Kin(NOK). Different from others we capture the mother clinic and thus we are able to know who did not attend for a clinic and do followup. Our team is made up of health workers and IT personnel, with this combination we are self contained and thus able to scale fast, software development is done internally thus reduced cost. Most organization use Mobile Apps for such initiative but from our research in Turkana County, less than 5% expectant mothers own a smart phone, with our IT team we explored other options and settled on SMS based application supported by USSD.
