Describe what you intend to do and how you'll do it in one sentence (required 250 Characters)

VacciPlus aims to use micro credit to motivate caregivers in the rural areas who are unaware of immunization or facing financial/physical difficulties which prevent them from accessing vaccination services.

Explain the idea (less than 2,000 characters)

In places like sub-Saharan Africa 1 in 5 children do not receive life-saving vaccination with the hardest to reach communities being most at risk of vaccine-preventable diseases. National agencies often cite low demand by caregivers as a result of lack of awareness or caregivers being physically or economically constrained. Caregivers who live in rural areas tend to be engaged in subsistence farming or livestock rearing. These target caregivers (aged between 16 to 40) also stay in areas where the immunization rate is lower than the national average and not surprisingly access to micro credit is low or non-existent. VacciPlus enables these caregivers to access micro-credit without the need for any credit history or collateral. The overall benefit as seen in other developing countries like Bangladesh is that there is a noticeable increase in the vaccination rate of children. Other benefits include increased economic security and physical mobility for these caregivers as well as being financially empowered to seek further medical services. For a caregiver to access VacciPlus they first have to be part of a credit groups in their respective community. Being a member of this group, the caregivers are taught financial strategies on how to save, income-generating strategies and also learn techniques of preventing oneself from being a defaulter. The main selection criteria for joining the group is that the caregiver should ensure their ward/children have received all available vaccinations. Seeking out other medical services can also be added as a means of obtaining higher credit.

The idea of using micro credit to stimulate caregivers in Africa is new. I will be leveraging my fintech skill set which was developed whilst building a micro credit scheme for African SME's. In other similar markets like Bangladesh, where micro credit was used as an incentive for caregivers it was noticed that the vaccination rate significantly increased in the space of one year.
