Using community behavior change communication agents (BCC) to provide caregiver awareness in immunization service delivery and mobile clinical outreach services by a team of clinicians who make routine visits to rural and hard-to-reach commmunities

Explain the idea (less than 2,000 characters)

In, Tanzania between 20%-80% of caregiver did not allow their children to get immunization services. In most places, this would be labeled as taboo and prohibited by caregivers. We seek to increase immunization services in Morogoro, Tanzania by training and equipping local women to become behavior change communication agents (BCC). A Behavior change communication agent is a local woman trained as behavior changes assistant who works within her own community, providing contextualized, free services to caregivers for the aim of increase immunization service awareness. She is not an outsider, but a woman from the community, working for her community. This makes her uniquely capable to address the local context of immunization service delivery in her community. In this way, she is more effective than any health provider, or other outsider could ever be. We provides caregivers access to immunization service through alert caregiver the immunization mobile outreach services in their locations and provide education and free services including counseling. We will utilize the network of community behavior change communication agents (BCC) to help ensure that more caregivers in rural areas are using immunization services. BCC will alert caregivers to immunization services, including on days when the immunization service delivery team travels on outreach to villages, and refer caregivers to immunization services. BCC will also distribute stipends covering transportation fees for caregivers to ensure they can reach immunization services. BCC will focus on providing awareness of the benefits of the immunization services to caregivers, a stipend to pay for transport to immunization services, and assistance in convincing their caregivers to allow children to receive immunization services. Who are your end users and how well do you know them? (750 characters)

Our beneficiaries are caregivers in areas in and around the cities of kilosa, mvomero,malinyi in Morogoro,Tanzania, who their children lack immunization services. By extension, our work will impact thousands of families. Operation BCC will made a tremendous impact in the three largest cities of Morogoro, Tanzania (a state that is among those ranked worst for immunization services delivery). 304 BCC (grassroots behavioral communication change agent) will be trained to be change agents in their own communities.

How is the idea unique? (750 Characters)

Behavior change communication agents approach to address the poor immunization services delivery is unique among other initiatives for several reasons including: 1. Behavior change communication agents harnesses the unique power of local women to affect change within their own communities. In this way, support is highly contextualized for the local community. Empowering caregiver’s can be made more relevant through effective branding and communications on popular media outlets. Media is a proven source of empowering caregiver’s information on immunization services delivery. Involving caregivers themselves in the development of media communications helps ensure that efforts reach the intended audience.

Hello Anne,
Thanks for check in, from our pilot we learn that to use the behavior communication change agent (Bcc) it is cost effective approach to increase awareness of immunization service coverage among caregiver this is because we select Bcc agent within the community the live.This led caregiver to believe Bcc agent and finally it become very easy for caregiver to accept immunization service.Also our pilot led us to create some changes the use of Bcc agent within the community we served and not outside.
