Together to End Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (TEViD)
Creating a circuit involving caregivers, community and workers in fight to end vaccine preventable deadly diseases.
Describe what you intend to do and how you'll do it in one sentence (required 250 Characters)
TEViD aims at building a circuit from caregivers through community to health care providers using mobile technology/pendant reminders for vaccination and education in local dialects to build health seeking behaviour among men &women in North Nigeria.
Explain the idea (less than 2,000 characters)
Studies has shown that 1 out of every 5 children under the age of five is fully vaccinated against killer diseases. According to The new Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey report MICS 2016-17, organized by UNICEF indicated that only eight percent (8%) of children from North-western part of Nigeria were fully vaccinated and seventeen point-five (17.5%) from North-eastern part of the country compared to South-west which has over forty-seven percent (47.9%) of children that were fully vaccinated. This is mainly due to improper awareness, Education and cultural factors.
Mothers are common caregivers for their children, although men also are caregivers but commonly in urban and satellite areas.
TEViD intends to integrate the education of fathers (who are the commonly the decision makers in the family; young men too), the mothers who are direct caretakers of the kids( including young girls in early marriage) and the community leaders(women group leaders, village heads and chiefs, faith based organisation leaders) with their normal community programs. This will no doubt alter in change in perception of vaccines and promote health seeking behaviour. Here the link to the healthcare providers is placed with the mobile technology.
The application of mobile technology to send instant messages for reminders of vaccination schedules, to get feedback from caregivers(complains, suggestions and ideas). This will keep the caregiver and the healthcare provider intouch for timely adjustments and improvements on the project.
A light plastic pendant to wear on children to ensure full vaccination compliance by caregivers. (We found out that within the rural areas, children and infants are easily worn Woolen/leather crafted necklace for cure/protection as claimed by their parents.
A petty reward will also be given to mothers upon full immunization of their kids.
The whole arrangement becomes a circle that will progress a long term relationship within a short period of time.

I was born and brought up in the northern part of Nigeria where I was spurred into studying public health by the rate of mistakes, morbidity and mortality of children and women over diseases that could be easily prevented. To this effect, I have volunteered for community outreach in Gussorro,Fuka in Niger state and in Lugbe of FCT. All for the fight against killer diseases among children and education of women.
The northern region has the highest population of illiterate mothers due to cultural and religious factors top of which is the polygamous family system where the men make the decision for the wives.
How is the idea unique? (750 Characters)
The idea is unique as providing a viscous circuit between caregivers - community - healthcare providers may seem breakable due to cultural and social factors. But TEViD is infusing education and practical applications through an already existing system so as not to disrupt cultural processes but to teach and change norms from the known to the unknown.
The pendant design is unique too, using a simple mark to identify user, it can remind caregivers of immunization schedules during morning or night baths of children.
