Describe what you intend to do and how you'll do it in one sentence (required 250 Characters)

Solar Polar will provide the technology needed to ensure the caregiver and the children in their charge will have access to temperature sensitive vaccine irrespective of where they live even where there is no electricity available for refrigeration.

Explain the idea (less than 2,000 characters)

Vast populations live in regions of the world where electricity provision is unreliable or even non-existent. So then, as much as 75% of vaccines and medicines can be rendered unusable because of inconsistent critical temperature control, ideally +3 to +10 degrees. For example by Freeze Damage say in Ice Boxes. Working back from the end beneficiary, the child, to the caregiver responsible for the child's welfare, to the organisations supporting and engaging with the caregivers, to the supply chain all the way to vaccine production and those who will pay for it. Solar Polar Ltd's technology was originally conceived as a solution to ensure vaccine stability. It has also evolved into a system that can provide cool air, warm air, potentially non-potable water in humid regions which with the addition of minerals can be made drinkable. With the extra advantages of doing so without electricity, has no moving parts (minimum maintenance), silent and emits no CO2 or other Greenhouse gasses. Produces the cheapest watt of cooling available today. The benefit are multiple, vaccine integrity, also crop/produce chilling at point of production or domestic storage (If methane of rotten food was counted a county it would be 3rd largest), air conditioning for all. Impacting other big issues such as social inclusion of women, to be free to pursue an education and subsequently seek paid for work rather than being tied to managing difficult every day food sourcing (some walk for miles to buy food on a daily basis) and then meal production for the family/community. Using the free power of the Sun the equipment utilises a revolutionary Solar Thermal patented technology (not Photovoltaic panels that produce power to then run equipment), primarily to provide cooling. Not only can we maintain vaccines then, but chill the room and chill the food purchased to stop spoilage. Imagine the holistic health benefits for the Carer and Children alike. A healthier environment and nutrition as well.

Which part(s) of the world does this idea target?

  • North Africa
  • Eastern Africa
  • Middle Africa
  • Southern Africa
  • Western Africa
  • Caribbean
  • Central America
  • South America
  • Central Asia
  • Eastern Asia
  • South-eastern Asia
  • Southern Asia
  • Western Asia
  • Oceania

Geographic Focus (less than 250 Characters)

Any region, country and their communities that are negatively impacted by high ambient temperatures, that may have unstable or even non existent electricity supply to run equipment. Those that do have electricity but it is expensive or intermittent.

Who are your end users and how well do you know them? (750 characters)

All those who are marginalised regarding good health provision services and often are also amongst those affected by extreme poverty. Communities who live with minimal infrastructure and facilities. The individual children who need the vaccine and medicine in order to live a healthy life. The caregivers who tend to the children's wellbeing. The health providers focused on both. We have already established links with the WHO and The Tear Fund.

How is the idea unique? (750 Characters)

This is a Solar Thermal solution not Photovoltaic, it has no moving parts (low maintenance) and silent in operation, does not need electricity, creates no CO2. The elements within it do not need replenishing and will still exist 50 years from now. According to the World Health Organisation photovoltaic vaccine storage systems have only on average a 17month lifespan, which is not enough for sustainable longterm use. Creates cooling, and is free to run as solar powered. Also potentially heating, hot water, grey water in humid climates and if then treated drinkable. A solar thermal charger for phones/tech. Developed in part at Imperial College London, the UKs premier science university and LSBU with registered office in Peterborough UK.

Hi Paul, I am interested in your Solar Polar Project. I have read you contribution and I am interested to know more about your product and the result of your small tests. I am developing a carrier which you can see in great detail here and I would love to collaborate with refrigeration engineers within this contest.
Kindly review my submission and see if there is a good chance for us to do something about vaccine wastage.

Hi Marichu, Thank you for your message and interest. I have had a good look at your submission and I find it very interesting. I like the fact that art is key to you also, as that is a key fundamental to all good design is it not? As you obviously know so well being a doctor, vaccine is temperature sensitive and as such needs consistent control. I will share your information with our co-founders and team. I know that they are very knowledgable in refrigeration cold chain challenges and solutions. Our trials have been more than small as the tests have been running for over a year in India and we know how the changes in weather and the seasons have an effect and what to do about it.
I look forward to discussing what may be possible/feasible soon.
Warm Regards. paul

Hi Paul, thank you for your encouraging reply. I must say that this challenge reinforces the spirit of collaboration globally! This is a multifaceted problem and it would take brains of different backgrounds to converge and come up with a solution.
Looking forward to great possibilities!
Best Regards, Marichu

Hi Marichu, I agree, the old saying "The sum of the parts.." etc comes to mind.
I too am looking forward to what may be.

Hi Marichu, yes that is the attitude. The impossible we can do immediately perfection may take a little longer. We will get there. What would you like to focus on first?

Hi Paul, thanks for reaching out to kick start this. Let me share the cooling component needed for this carrier. I will email what I am working on so far regarding the refrigeration aspect of Vaxi. Should I send it to Solar Polar contact email? My email is marichu@olmsolutions.com.
