By using neonate biometrics to link vaccination records to infants, Simprints will enhance caregiver experience by eliminating the delays and inconvenience caused at the health centre by damaged or lost health record cards/barcodes.
Explain the idea (less than 2,000 characters)
According to Gavi (2018), only 7% of children living in the 73 poorest countries are fully immunized. One of the bottlenecks to full immunization is demand by caregivers, which is directly impacted by their experience at the health facility and motivation to return for follow up immunization.
Once at a health facility, the caregiver presents a vaccination card/barcode/QR code which is used by the health worker to identify the child and determine the next vaccine dose to be administered. However, such cards can be damaged, lost, or—especially for migrant populations—limited to a single clinic, given that health systems often vary by region. This lack of a reliable identification, in turn, means both healthcare worker and caregiver cannot verify whether a child has received full, partial, or duplicate vaccinations.
This challenge can be addressed by developing neonate biometrics that plug into existing digital systems at clinics and are intuitive for both health workers and caregivers to understand. Biometric identification at point of vaccination ensures that once the caregiver reaches the facility, the correct child’s record can be pulled up with the touch of a finger, and the right vaccine can be administered, facilitating continuity of care and ultimately supporting full vaccination. Caregivers no longer need to keep track of vaccination cards, improving their motivation to visit the healthcare clinic for subsequent doses.
Our solution benefits caregivers at the last mile by improving the quality of experience at the health centre: by replacing vaccination cards with a biometrics-integrated digital ID platform, our solution enhances ease of access and definitively closes the loop on verifying which vaccines a child has received, and which they are missing.

Simprints has been user-focused since day one. Our product has been co-created with frontline workers to ensure a seamless and holistic experience -- it is ergonomic, mobile, rugged, waterproof, and resilient.
We work with our partners to train and support users by customizing the Simprints app in the local language and helping with community sensitization. Further, we adhere to the highest privacy & data security standard, Europe's GDPR, seek explicit beneficiary consent before the collection of their biometric data, and follow best privacy-by-design practices. Additionally, we work with partners like BRAC and the Children Investment Fund Foundation to understand and troubleshoot on-the-ground operational challenges in projects.
How is the idea unique? (750 Characters)
Our solution is unique in that we use biometric identification to verify full vaccination, thus enhancing caregiver experience at the last-mile and insulating them from the inconvenience caused by lost cards or change in health centers. Currently, barcodes or vaccine cards are used, both of which can be easily lost or destroyed, leading to wrong or no vaccinations administered to the child. Indeed in a previous project, Simprints enabled continuity of care for women failed by traditional barcode systems. In testing our system against a barcode-based health passport system, 10% of women were linked to multiple health passports, precluding continuity of care, but were fortunately linked to a consistent record with Simprints.

Simprints is a nonprofit tech4dev company from the University of Cambridge. Our mission is to transform the way we fight poverty, using digital ID to radically increase transparency and effectiveness in global development. Our goal is to make sure that every vaccine, every bednet, every dollar reaches its intended beneficiary.

Simprints is a Gavi INFUSE Pacesetter. Additionally, we partner with large private foundations that focus on healthcare delivery.
For this project, we are in early-stage discussions to partner with a top biometrics company that produces world-leading accurate matching algorithms.
Currently, our implementing partners include BRAC, Mercy Corps, and Watsi. With BRAC, we are contracted to reach >4m beneficiaries across Ethiopia and Bangladesh by 2021.
