Managing Risks and Building Resilience

Sustaining public trust and confidence in immunization is a key objective of national immunization programs, but adverse events can erode confidence in vaccines, and in the authorities delivering them.

Ideas in this category may touch on encouraging healthy strengthening of risk capacity, social listening and leveraging media engagement. Some approach examples include:

  • Increasing national capacity in risk and crisis communications, to ensure effective and timely responses to adverse events following immunization, vaccine related events and vaccine hesitancy

  • Building systems for media monitoring and social listening

  • Engaging proactively with media, including briefings on any important announcements or
changes to the immunization program

Some successful examples already noted in the field:

  • Developing and updating communication plans to address Vaccine Related Events (VRE)
  • Building routine systems for media monitoring and social listening that can pick up events, rumors and misinformation to guide quick response by partners in country
  • Building the capacity of Ministry of Health and partners to engage effectively with the media
