Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

The project is to upcycle 1- 30,000 tires 2-50,000 Aluminum mechanical solid wastes 3- Solid wastes, about 300 Tons of waste wood 4- to transform them into the illustrated functional furniture. 5-Promoting and selling furniture pieces worldwide through furniture design and interior exhibitions. 6- Training and Employing additional 30 full-time artists , 100 part-time workers for the upcoming year.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

our beneficiaries are : - Trash collectors , where we take from them solid wastes with higher prices than usual - Local crafts men, where they get to utilize their dying crafts into a new / meaningful business - The city, by decreasing the burnt solid wastes by creating an ecosystem where solid wastes are more of a financial value rather than being built. - our clients, by accomodating there needs and providing a value for money | easily sustained product with a competitive price

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

Our idea is to design totally green furniture that is composed of solid wastes ( tires, washing machine upcycled parts, upcycled wood, re-purposed jackets leather ) in order to build products that are revolutionary to use. What makes what we do unique is that we design products with their mass production plan and machinery in a green manner that causes ZERO emissions. For Example : Our team designed and fabricated a special machine in order to achieve the designs you can see on our application. it cuts tires with ZERO fumes in 3 seconds !!! (We used to spend more than 2 hours cutting tires with ordinary machinery while doing our first prototypes )

Idea Proposal Stage (choose one)

  • Full Scale Roll Out: I have already tested and scaled this idea significantly with the intended user base.

Tell us more about your organization/company (1 sentence and website URL)

Expertise in sector

  • 3-5 years

Organization Filing Status

  • Yes, we are a registered company.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

After I finished my Architectural design degree, I gave up doing design. I was passionate about creating cultural hubs and art centers. I intended to initiate one in my home city. At that time we were short in budget, I had to do the job of creating the whole interior from the community thrown aways. Months later we had to close the space, I went and lived in a neighborhood in Portsaid known for trading wastes in order to create my first collection. My starting point was February 2016

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

In the current Economic disaster happening in Egypt, most of the local craftsmen end up finding their workshops closed. with an Employment rate above 40% of 50 Million youthful minds under 25 years. Let's talk more about numbers in order to understand how do or design based company empower the local community. In order to fabricate 10 pieces we employ : - 2 product designers - waste collectors and sorters - machine breaking down workshops - 1-2 photographer - Marketing and PR Specialists -Socia media /web developer -sales specialists - 2-3 mobikya artists to put everything together By selling one product we empower all these families of our full time workers, designers along with external workshops that work in waste collection and sorting. Uniting all this manpower in order to create a meaningful functional product of a price that ranges from 200 -700 USD and that causes ZERO emissions saving the planet from all of this leukemia causing black smoke

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

Mobikya already co-operated before with : USAID, US embassy , CRS (Catholic releif fund ) and we are also currently working side by side with Egyptian Ministry of Environment. Once, we proceed with the more final steps about executing this specific project with its 30,000 tires target . we are going to connect all our connections and institutions to work on executing this huge milestone. We are also welcoming "Reselling partners : from everywhere world wide where we partner up with local entrepreneur that invest buying 60 pieces and introducing them to their local market. We also partner up with showrooms in different countries.

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

Our design studio is located in the heart of Old Cairo, between the authenticity of Cairo's opld heritage and around under-privilidged neighborhoods that survives on used items selling, selling old machines, wood. We are located in the Pottery village where local designers are located. So our mission is to bond those local designers, and craftsmen and connect them to waste sources, empower them through revolving around a supply chain to fabricate these pieces.

Geographic Focus

Our geographic focus is : Fabrication : Egypt , Cairo Shipping : World wide

How many months are required for the project idea? (500 characters)

We have already been operating for 2.5 years with more than 1000 Pieces fabricated and sold only in 2017. In order to Upcycle the taget of this project we will operate it in 10-13 Months in Fabrication , Marketing, and selling. ( we mean the target of upcycling 30k tires , 40k aluminum mechanical wastes, 300 T of wood is doable in 10-13 months )

Did you submit this idea to our 2017 BridgeBuilder Challenge? (Y/N)

  • No

If Yes, how has project idea changed, grown, or evolved since last year? (2,000 characters)

This whole project is built from 500 re-used oil barrels. About 96 Million barrels are being fabricated every day to be used in transporting petroleum products. after barrels finish their task, they get dumped forming a solid waste with un-proposed solution. We built the whole Maker Faire Cairo 2018 version out of those discarded treasure. Follow the album to see who #500Barrels didn't fail to be a set up for one of the biggest events in the MENA region for TECH with audience number exceeding +10,000 attendees this year.

Hi Ibrahim Abougendy ,
I love your idea because I think it has the potential to scale up to a complete up-cycle center where people can explore with a wide range of materials and applications.
Have you though about scaling it up to other countries? Also, there are upcycle initiatives such the one in Lebanon called the PID levant.

Thank you Luz for your fruitful participation,

An upcycling hub is an interesting scaling model ;yet, our work is slightly different.
We develop mass-producable solutions and then set the supply chain required to fabricate our designs. Our production capability is 200-300 pieces per month regarding tires-based furniture.

1- we can cut down the solid wastes which are the components of our furniture.
2- Set up a complete ecosystem starting collecting raw materials, sorting, designing , fabricating, research then selling.

We believe that this scale up model is more environmentally effective.
