Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)
Worldwide, 7.3 million births per year are by girls between the age of 15 and 19, and a further 2 million births are by girls under the age of 15. Of these 2 million, 90 per cent are already married, revealing that many girls are being married off at a very young age. Kenya contributes to this percentage with 103 in every 1,000 pregnancies being attributed to girls aged between 15 and 19. Four hundred adolescent girls give birth daily in our beautiful country, Kenya, and an estimated 70,000 are expelled from school every year because of pregnancy.
Community Focus Group (CFG) is an organisation focussed on helping this group of teenage mothers, who are forced to leave school and are at risk of sinking even further into poverty. CFG is a group of Kenyan citizens from Nairobi who are connected by a deep love of their home country. Since its founding in 2000, the group has worked to help marginalised groups in their community and to promote the aims of the 2030 Agenda. The 2030 Agenda, the most comprehensive social plan of action that humankind has created to this day, was signed and launched by every UN member state in 2015.
CFG expresses itself through storytelling – a form of communication with a long history of being used in Africa to raise awareness about social injustice and challenges. The founder and Executive Director of CFG is Pamela Ateka.
CFG’s vision is to create a centre for teenage mothers that will support these young women in their new roles as mothers on the one hand, while at the same time help them to further develop their personalities, take control of their lives, and offer them a path to independence through professional training that will prepare them for a range of careers.
You can find further information on the issues affecting teenage mothers, on Community Focus Group (CFG) and on CFG founder Pamela Ateka attached.
