Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

The idea behind the project is to develop a group to travel to the Philippines that will educate the youth of the Philippines on restoration and safe, environmentally friendly clean-up methods while another half of the group conducts a clean-up. The challenge chosen was Prosperity and Planet. This would help to solve the issues that the Philippines experiences today with poverty, educational opportunity, and excessive waste. The goal is to inspire young people in a poorer country so that will be motivated to make changes in the future to better the state of their homeland.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

The beneficiaries of this project are the people of the Philippines and the people who have the opportunity to teach the children. This is because with the clearance of waste and the education of children there will be a higher chance for the Philippines of the solving waste problem and the rate of education for children will increase. This experience would be beneficial to the volunteers teaching the children because they will have firsthand experience with people in need and will be inspiring the youth of the world to work for improving the state of the planet and the environment around them.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

This idea is unique because it incorporates an education that covers ecology and restoration in a country with a low education rate all while actually making progress with restoration as the project goes on. I believe that the approach of educating the children on the best methods of restoring their home and the environment, in general, does not only improve their lives, given the new knowledge that they have received, but it also improves the lives of future generations because the knowledge will be passed down.

Idea Proposal Stage (choose one)

  • Initial Design: I am exploring the idea, gathering the inspiration and information I need to test it with real users.

Tell us more about your organization/company (1 sentence and website URL)

The organization aims to educate children in impoverished countries so that they can learn the proper tools to educate others and improve the conditions of the area that they are living in, and to start the process of restoration in each country.

Organization Filing Status

  • No, but we plan to register in the future.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

A few months ago, I watched a documentary that featured what the day to day lives of children in the Philippines looked like, and it showed the overwhelming waste problem and that the children did not attend school, but rather they collected garbage to sell all day. It hurt me to see this happening in impoverished countries, especially to such young kids, and it inspired me to develop this idea.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

My plan to cover Planet and Prosperity was influenced by the issues of poverty and lack of education that are present in modern-day Philippines. The issue with waste is so great that it has become a part of their everyday lives and it is something that they are forced to live around. With a lack of education, there is less hope for the children and the people of the Philippines because there are no large strides being made towards improving the status of the living environment and general knowledge of the population.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

To carry out this project there would need to be a group of people willing to develop some sort of curriculum or plan to teach these children about ecology and restoration so that they and the Philippines might have a better future. Alongside the education aspect there would also need to be a team to collect recyclables and garbage around and in the river. It would be offered as an immersion trip for young adults and older teens. Some high schools have a large project called a “Passion Project” and advertising this idea to students to choose for their project would be a great way to get more students involved.

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

The benefit of students and young adults being the ones that are contributing to this is that they are gaining the power to make a difference in the lives of others and learning to be more giving to others all while learning restoration skills that all people should be able to wield in the future. Young people are influential and can inspire people even younger than them to follow in their footsteps and work to make the world a healthier and happier place.

Geographic Focus

This idea targets specifically the province of Lanao del sur in the Philippines.

How many months are required for the project idea? (500 characters)

I believe that 24 months would be a reasonable amount of time to set some general roots down that will move the Philippines forward.

Did you submit this idea to our 2017 BridgeBuilder Challenge? (Y/N)

  • No

Hi Maggie, I love how you love helping others and how you were inspired by a video you watched. I agree, living in dirty and unsanitary conditions is not a suitable way for anyone to grow up. I appreciate the different avenues you suggest to help kick start a program to help these kids learn to help themselves. I would like to know if you have any ideas or a more specific way to start implementing or if you have any suggestions as to how to get people involved or how to possibly get funding. The questions asked below are a great way to start!!!
