Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

My project idea is to create a mobility package for Syrian refugees. This package will provide daily resources that make life on the move a little easier. Inside the package, there will be a portable solar energy panels, and a portable tent. The solar panels absorb sunlight as a source of energy and generate electricity. This is important for refugees because they do not always have access to electricity, so this mini generator can provide small amounts of light/energy when needed. A portable tenet is also included because the housing refugees live in is not ideal or secure. Many times multiple refugees are squished into a shelter, and are forced to be on the move the next day. By providing them with a portable tent that is lightweight and collapsible, they are able to set up shelter where ever they are and be protected from weather. My idea helps solves the problems related to refugees’ mobile lifestyle. As Syrians are escaping the civil war occuring, they are looking for opportunities of peace. They are in search of a peaceful lifestyle away from any wars or violence. While living as refugees, they continue to struggle with finding prosperity. Coming from a affluent country, I am able to contribute my resources in order to help others. My idea supports the planet because the idea is eco-friendly. Solar panels are 100% natural energy. My idea is simple. It does not take a lot to work for once the refugees receive the package; it would be self explanatory.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

The beneficiaries are the Syrian refugees who are on the move from the Syrian civil war. The lifestyle of a refugee is never secure. They only have limited resources to survive. They often share small cottages with many other family members, and are left without electricity so the nights are completely dark. These conditions are not suitable for humans to thrive. My idea aims to provide them with simple resources to make their living conditions a little more pleasant. I decided to focus on two areas: housing and electricity. Because they are nomadic, refugees’ homes are never a guarantee. Therefore, with this package, they are provided a pop up tent. It is easy to carry and can expand big enough to fit a family of 6. While it is not a solid structure, it will allow refugees to take shelter to survive terrible weather conditions. In regards to electricity, a mini hand held solar panel will be included to give them access to electricity on the go.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

I believe that my idea is new, simple, and effective. Here in the United States, solar panels and housing is easily accessible. However, near Syria, the refugees struggle to obtain these basic necessities. Although my idea does not consist of a new invention, my package binds the inventions to the beneficiaries, meaning I am the connecter. This idea can easily bridge peace, prosperity, and the planet. Because the package is so simple, it allows for anyone to use it. While other organizations strive to help refugees specifically in the long run, my idea focuses on supporting their current lifestyle. Sending these packages to refugees is easy to maneuver and can result in an effective change.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

I had the pleasure of taking an Environmental Science course this year. In the course, we focused on sustainable living, habitats and ecosystems, and helping the planet as it faces major changes. Our final project assignment is to participate in this challenge. Our teacher’s goal is to encourage us, students, to create new innovative ideas that will bridge peace, prosperity, and the planet.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

Peace is defined as freedom from conflict, and that is specifically what the Syrian refugees are attempting to obtain. The Syrian Civil War has led many civilians to escape their homeland and begin their mobile lifestyle towards freedom. Prosperity is defined as being successful or profitable in well-being. At the moment, the refugees are not living a prosperous lifestyle. However, this package will assist them to in getting along with their daily lives easier. Planet is defined as the natural resources provided in our common home. A major natural resources is the sunlight for it provides energy, light, and heat. The solar panels included will utilize this resource and will allow for easy access to energy on the move. Solar panels support sustainable living because they do not produce pollution of any type, as they are all natural.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

My school community is always engaged and supportive of all student’s ideas. Specifically my Environmental Science class, works hands on to participate in helping our planet. That being said, if my project got pushed forward, I am confident that my community will support me. From working together on group projects, to working together as a whole school to show our spirit, the communities I am involved in have always demonstrated positive enthusiasm, followed by the best outcome possible. When everyone is engaged and on task, a task can be completed to the best of its ability.

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

With my community being a high school, there are many strengths that come along with that. Students are always eager and ready to learn and participate. This means they collaborate new ideas, and listen to others when needed. Being so young, teenagers also have the ability to put a lot of time into a project; they can focus on serving their communities. Also, if they find themselves very passionate about an idea, they can contribute putting in their efforts over a long period of time.

Geographic Focus

This targets the migration of Syrian refugees located near Jordan in the Middle East.

How many months are required for the project idea? (500 characters)

The process should take no longer than 6 months. The first task would be to fundraise money. Next we would have to discuss with local companies and see if they are willing to contribute products, such as mini solar panels, for a discounted rate. Then we would have to focus on building the expandable tents, if not already existing. The final push would be to put the packages together and end them off the a organization in Syria that works to support refugees. They can then deliver the packages.

Kelsey, a very noble idea indeed. I agree with Lauren that the idea matches your caring and thoughtful personality well. As someone who has heard first hand accounts from my parents about their experience at refugee camp, an idea like this would have been life changing for them. I know they spent their fist few months in refugee camp begging and trying to find materials to build shelter. I know my dad describes his first home as leaves and sticks to block the rain and him and my mom sleeping in the sand. I can only imagine how their experience could have been different if they had a kit similar to this one. I love the idea of making this shelter light weight and portable but also offering a solar component to this. I wonder how many people actually travel with electronics to be able to use this. Maybe offering some type of cooking kit with this as well so people can have that option as well. It would be interesting to look into countries currently accepting and helping Syrian refugees to see if they do offer similar products of if they would be open to this idea. What a great way to bring peace and prosperity to a people who desperately need that.
