Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

My project is a documentary film on public health and environment titled “Save Water, Save Lives”. It focuses on water pollution, river damage, water logging & its harmful impact on human health in Bangladesh. My IDEA is- “Film for Bridging Planet and Prosperity”. Water is one of the major global issues in the world. Without water there can be no existence in the planet and earth. Almost three-fourth of the Earth’s surface is water. It is the source of all life on our planet. Unfortunately, there is scarcity of water & lack of clean drinkable water in many parts of the world. Access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation services is vital to human health and it sustains human life. It is estimated that around 783 million people, in 43 countries, do not have access to clean water and around 2.5 billion do not have access to adequate sanitation. Bangladesh is one such country which is affected from water-related issues, sometimes caused by natural calamity and sometimes human-made disaster. Bangladesh is a land of rivers and it has about 230 rivers. Around 140 million people depend on them for a living and for transportation. Rivers and lakes are the main sources of water in Bangladesh. But due to rapid urbanization, lakes and rivers have been occupied and it has created serious threats to public health and environment. Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh is a 400 year old city with a population of over 17 million. The city is situated on the northern bank of river Buriganga and surrounded by other rivers. Unfortunately, these rivers are being polluted due to encroachment and unplanned industrialization. Chemical waste from the rapidly expanding factories and tanneries, is severely affecting the health and long-term sustainability of the river. To address the water issues & for a solution, I have planned to make the documentary to raise awareness for saving rivers, protecting the lives & environment, and thus bridging Planet & Prosperity.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

The beneficiaries of my project are the children (newborn + all ages), girls, boys, women and men of the whole community living on the bank of the rivers and surrounding areas. Also the dwellers of Dhaka city, who are the victims of water logging due to pollution, encroachment and river damage. The children, girls, boys, women and the masses in the above photographs - all of them are the beneficiaries of my project.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

We are using visual media to implement a challenging idea. Film is the best medium to touch and attract public sentiment. There have been research, surveys and articles on the issues of water pollution, river damage, health hazard and natural & human made disasters. But it did not have a positive impact on the issues. Visual media is the most powerful tool to create awareness, influence the policy makers, make a positive impact and real change. That's why I believe that my idea is unique and this approach will be more successful. Until now, there is no documentary on this topic.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

In 2011, I started a project on cultural heritage supported by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Bangladesh. One project location was in Tongi, situated on the bank of Turag river. I saw the dying condition of the river & sufferings of people. This inspired me to start a project. On the other hand, river Buriganga is in another part of capital Dhaka, which is also in the same condition. The impact is serious water logging in the city. I have been doing research on the topic for 7 years.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

For a prosperous life, the environment should be pollution free and the masses need a healthy life. If health is in threat, there could be no Peace and no Prosperity. Polluted river, water logging and water scarcity are the major causes of unhealthy environment and diseases in the local community. They are deprived of Clean Water and Sanitation. Prosperity can’t be achieved if people live a hazardous life and can’t improve their living condition. Both climate change and human made disasters are harmfully impacting the lives of community people. My project is targeting the Sustainable Goals: 3 - Good Health, 6 - Clean Water and sanitation, 10 - Reduced Inequalities, 13 - Climate Action.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

The community people of the project areas will be involved and engaged in the process of making my documentary. They will speak about the causes and their sufferings. I had interaction with them during making the trailer. There are volunteers to assist me. Some experts of the related topic will be interviewed and they will give opinion and suggestions for a solution of the problem.

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

My strength are the volunteers, young boys, girls, women, the boatmen community living on the riverside areas. I have also my shooting unit that includes camera man, shooting coordinator, camera assistants, light men, production boy etc.

Geographic Focus

Nobel way to address probably the most important issue in South Asian countries. Climate change and other factors should be kept under check. Water is the blood line of human life.

Thank you so much for your comments and appreciate my Idea. Both climate change and human activities are impacting the region of South Asia. Your Idea is also great!. Wishing you best of luck. Regards. Shahida

Thank you for the support! Not a lot of people realize this but there is a actually a major connection between our plastic use and how it impacts the climate. Did you know that about 8% of the worlds hydrocarbons resources are used to produce the plastic that the world currently uses. If we do not change how we use plastics, by 2050 plastic use will require about 20% of the worlds hydrocarbons...this is one of the key reasons Algramo believes it is so important to rethink a better more sustainable way to use packaging. Best of luck to you in the challenge! Brian
