Satellite Captains: Empowering rural youth to build a prosperous and sustainable field in post-conflict areas.
We make the field in post-conflict rural areas a scenario of participation, collaboration, and trust.
In the video we see an example of a young rural woman with a sustainable company. In Planeta Rural with the Capitan de Satélite model we promote the creation of sustainable companies in the field affected by the armed conflict, building bridges to establish trust and facilitate collaboration.

The model promotes rural youth empowerment aiming at the creation of satellites in zones affected by armed conflict, illicit crop production, or in peace process.
A satellite is an array of local actors within a rural community that supported by collective intelligence platforms and financing platforms generate valued connections with urban volunteers and investors allowing to integrate local capabilities, knowledge and resources from different actors. The purpose is to promote the co-creation of productive, social, cultural, environmental, or technological entrepreneurial projects, as well as political projects, which are implemented by youths and contribute to the welfare of their rural community.
We seek that rural youth find in the entrepreneurial path an alternative for developing their potential and the creation of richness in the field and for the field, without having to migrate to the city or turn into active actors of the conflict. Also to lead technical, financial and technology resources centered in the cities toward the poorest rural communities affected by the armed conflict.
Key elements in the model:
Impact measuring: we monitor economical, productive, social, cultural, technological, environmental and political variables of the youth, via an instrument that captures information on and offline by means of an app to identify changes of the situation.
Training of the Satellite Captain (youth leader in the rural community): is a training program in soft skills, tic’s, which allows young to become a bridge between the community and external actors through the platforms.
Implementation of the mentorship program for the incubation and acceleration: by professional or university volunteers by present and virtual mode, that leads to start up of youth entrepreneurships.
Design and implementation of platforms: for the collective co-creation of entrepreneurships and their financing, under modes of donation, crop adoption and investment.
Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)
The beneficiaries must have the following 3 characteristics:
• Be a young person between 15 and 35 years of age that has an idea of a productive, economic, social, environmental, cultural or political project and that wishes to implement in its territory as a life project for its development and the development of its rural community.
• Live in rural areas of the regions that have been or continue to be affected by the armed conflict in Colombia.
• Young farmers in the countryside (day laborer or small agricultural producer), young rural woman or man who is engaged in a non-agricultural activity, young indigenous, young afro-descendant, young people affected or displaced by violence who are going to return to the countryside, young rural ex-combatants of the guerrilla or illegal groups that are being reintegrated into society in the framework of the signing of the peace process, young person discriminated by their religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation or race.
How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)
We are a model of activating local capacities that connect not only financial resources but human and technical combining technological tools with local assets.
We don’t lead projects but generate the capacities, tools and networks so that the Satellite Captain themselves be the ones leading with support from their community.
The collective intelligence does not stay in just co-creating, but allows the development of capacities (mentorship) and the start-up of projects always leading into action.
The model directs to the development of sustainable entrepreneurships from an economical and environmental scope.
As an externality, we promote that urban professional and university students see the potential the countryside has for creation and distribution of wealth.
Compared to other social organizations, we are young and flexible, focused in giving quick answers with innovation. All of our team are young in its majority, which has allowed us to get closer easily to rural youths.

1. Never again will the countryside be considered as a synonym of backwardness and poverty, we will achieve an influential field, prosperous and with opportunity for all.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).
In Colombia, at the rural zones of armed conflict, the peace process is impacted by the drug trafficking business, which has led to illicit cocaine cropping by farmers and other organized groups. It is also affected by dissenting groups of the peace process who have created new groups outside of the law system.
The conflict at the same time has not ended entirely, impacting prosperity because the necessary conditions for economic sustainability and social order maintenance are not met. The rural youth are especially vulnerable to migration, micro traffic and the production of illicit crops.
Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)
We will mainly work with base organizations within the communities such as: youth collectives, existing collaborative networks, producer associations, indigenous communities associations. We will also connect universities, government institutions and private companies.
The role of base organizations is to articulate local actors, support the satellite captain for the start-up of entrepreneurships and the support for the creation and sustainability of the satellite.
Other organizations are government entities whose role is to help in the articulation, support the construction of spaces with the community and the spaces for the visibility of the entrepreneurs. They may also engage with infrastructure and financial support.
The private company will have a role in financial support, corporate volunteering and possible productive chaining. The universities will support with their knowledge, university volunteering and infrastructure.

Youth are agents of technological change and it is easier and more attractive for them to access technological resources such as platforms. By being young they have more energy to work, are optimistic and have hopes on a better future. A competitive advantage is the transition towards peace where we are in Colombia which favors the creation of a new ecosystem for the activation of satellites in zones of post conflict.
The project is aimed at rural communities in post-conflict zones in Colombia.

Co-creation and testing of programs, instruments and channels: impact measurement, training programs, mentoring, collective intelligence platforms, crowdfarming, donation and investment. (9 months)
