Promoting Yemeni local CSOs for Building peace and Planet

Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

The idea is to target 25 local CSOs from 5 governorates in Yemen (Sana’a, Aden, Lahj, Hajjah and Amran) and train them on peacebuilding, general public health issues and protecting the environment. After intensive trainings, a competitive application process will be opened to local CSOs to solicit innovative ideas to implement in their own areas. Oxfam’s partnership unit will identify the targeted CSOs and Oxfam will use technical consultancy firms to conduct trainings and design the required manuals. Oxfam will act as a grant manager throughout the project and monitoring and evaluation will be conducted for all activities. . The idea will address social tension as a result of the ongoing conflict and displacement and protect the environment from further damage caused by ongoing conflict from another side. The project will also create a new path for the local CSOs to think about creating linkages between peace and the planet as local actors in the Yemen.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

The direct beneficiaries are local CSOs and conflict affected community people and IDPs. The CSOs will be targeted on training and raising their awareness and promote their role on building peace and planet. The affected community and IDPs will be targeted by the innovative ideas of local CSOs on both building peace and protecting the environment and encourage best practices of taking care of planet within the conflict affected area. The estimated number of the targeted beneficiaries: 1- 25 local CSOs including 30% of them women based organization. 2- About 1000 individuals will be targeted by each local CSO = 25000, 30% of them women minimum.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

This idea is different from similar activities from two perspectives. Frist, it targets local CSOs and promote their role on building peace and planet. Second, it opens the doors of innovation and brilliant ideas from local perspective (bottom up thinking). The unique advantages is that the idea will implemented in conflict zone area where it will contribute on decreasing the social tension and bring the people to a common demand “peace” and common concern “planet”. The idea is unique by itself and we think that there is a limitation of similar ideas in such context. However and as part of promoting local humanitarian leadership we believe that this idea will be more successful as it gather between peace which is a common demand and planet which is also a common interest to protect.

The idea will be managed by Oxfam Yemen Office. Oxfam is working with different local actors and has many partnership relations with local CSOs whom Oxfam will collaborate with as part of supporting local actors and involving them more on the development and humanitarian responses. From the belief that brilliant ideas and best solutions are always come from the same environment, this make us inspired by the ideas that will come up from local CSOs on building peace and planet. Also, a local actor who are facing a very big humanitarian crisis, they can be very effective actors on promoting the peace building and protecting the planet in such difficult circumstances. We tried this experience with local CSOs when we faced the cholera outbreak when many CSOs

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

The local context in Yemen is witnessing now a conflict which affected the humanitarian situation in Yemen generally. This project will help on creating a new path for the local CSOs to think about creating linkages between peace and the planet as local actors in the Yemen. The peace as a first demand for all Yemenis and protection of the planet from further deterioration as a result of the conflict. Getting the ideas from the local CSOs as a bottom up thinking will influence all actors as the feeling of ownership is there.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

25 local NGOs who are considered as local partners. All of these local NGOs will come up with the ideas and will be granted to work in their respective areas. Further collaboration will be managed with the local authorities at both national and local level.
