Bringing prosperity to farmers through a mixed farming model based on natural farming ethics
Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)
The proposed farming model is a unique multi-cropping integrated farming model which takes nature balances and farmers income to altogether a new level. This natural farming method is based on the idea of zero budget and self-sustenance. Once the complete model is cultivated according to the idea, the whole arrangement is such that there is no requirement of any chemical fertilizers or pest control mechanism, nature takes care of everything by itself.
The farming model has two broader arrangements:-
1. Live fencing -The purpose of the fence is to protect the land from external hostilities and instabilities, which is caused due to human, animal, pest, wind and water intervention. Besides, providing protection to the land and the crop being grown within, the living fencing also helps in restoring the disturbed balance of the eco-system, not only of the agricultural land concerned but also of the surrounding environment. The produce of the living fence could be used for personnel, commercial and agricultural benefits. It is not necessary that the plants which have been specified under the model could only be used for fencing as a strict rule and could be replaced by alternative plants of like nature and characteristic, depending upon the plants which are locally available and could fulfill the said purpose.
2. The mixed farming model - In order to diversify the crops being cultivated by the farmers in a way that each crop compliments the growth of other resulting in better production, the model has been developed comprising different crops. The model is based on micro-management of farms with an integrated approach and a strong market linkage. Under the model a plot of land minimum half acre is converted into agro-forestry comprising fruits, vegetables and flower plants.
Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)
The direct beneficiaries of the project are small and marginal farmers. The project explicitly targets the unemployed rural youths. As this intervention is about nature and afforestation, larger population around the intervention area will be benefited from a healthy environment indirectly.
How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)
The idea is unique with its approach towards re- building balance between nature, human and livelihoods. It's a holistic farming model. Mostly other farming intervention has one sided approach, for instance - promotion of organic farming. Such interventions facing struggles with profitability in this age of market led interventions overtime takes the way of profitability. Consequently, though organically but only such products are cultivated or promoted which has a chance of higher profits.

I returned as a student of law to my village thinking my degree could help solve problems, which I wanted to solve. But it turned out that the problems that are existing are beyond books to be solved. Having raised up in a farmers family and being engaged with the problems, I realized that the key to problem solving lies in fixing our agricultural sector. Everything else will follow.
Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).
I was born in the 90s in a joint family in a village called Durdih in Bihar, a state that is famous in India for all the wrong reasons. I remember my childhood days where I grew up ignorant of all these stereotypes I would have to bear later as someone who was born in Bihar. One out of every two person in Bihar has been categorized as 'Below Poverty Line’, which means they have lesser means of meeting daily needs. 80 percent of the population lives in rural areas and farming is the main occupation. Conventional methods of farming and irrigation made farming non-profitable and often burdensome. The returns did not match the investment. Debt loans became a form as our culture that was deeply rooted within farming deteriorated. I realized that the key to problem solving lies in fixing our agricultural sector. Everything else will follow. The problems of illiteracy, unemployment, crime rates, and migration everything owes its root to non-productive work force within agriculture.
Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)
Finding farm labour is a major challenge in the agriculture sector. However, there is no shortage of farm labour in the village where we operate. There are large number of youth who are seasonal migrants. These youths are welcoming such opportunity where they could get work in their village itself. Studying the market reveals majority of the vegetables our coming outside the district of Lakhisarai in the local mandis. A large chain of retailers buys vegetable for further sell from these mandis.
The idea is targeted on the Durdih village in the state of Bihar in the country India.
