PositiveID

Give people in a city an ID card with their top 3 passions and interests so they can connect on that basis whatever their background.

More and more people are on the move. Our cities are becoming more diverse in theory but in reality, people stay in the circles that they know, separated by origin, race, religion, social background, gender, age...and do not connect outside these groups. More and more people, losing their existing connections or not establishing new ones, become lonely in the middle of growing cities. In many cases, their official id’s are at best neutral, but often they are sources of negative experiences. The Positive ID gathers what unites people, their passions and interests and making these visible and searchable

Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

The PositiveID bridges the silent divide between groups in our cities. In our cities people live in separate groups. Due to circumstances their groups may become smaller or disappear and they do not connect easily with new groups. They may be newcomers, students, older people, migrants., employees. We plan to meet them, in city administrations, where they have to pass, in resting homes and organisations, in schools and ask them for their top passions and interests which we can put on their Positive ID, physical and/or online. They can show it, Share it and read it and connect or be invited to connect with other people or organisations sharing their passion. Organisations can also get and show their Positive ID. The info about the passions will be available on the PositiveID and in a database. We see city workers, doctors and nurses, teachers, police, wearing their passions visibly on their badges so citizens can connect with them as persons. People in office buildings can also show it on their entry badges as a starting point for conversations. You can wear it at community events. As the info is stored in a db, people can also look for people with the same passions online on their smartphone and organisations can access it to invite new members. Schools can use it to find residents of their community who can share their passion in related classes. We had the suggestion to also check how apps like Meetup work. We plan on using geolocation to inform people of shared interests and events nearby. It is important that in all cases only the info on the 3 top passions and interests is visible to allow connections with new groups to happen.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

Students lost in a new city, people moving, older people losing their circle of connections, migrants in an unknown city.. Schools who want to connect to their community and find people with passions that they want to share in classes. Employees after yet another restructuring or move to anothr building.. Organisations looking for new members without exclusions.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

There are sites that try to connect community initiatives, like www.comunecter.org. ln Belgium http://giveaday.be connects volunteers and organizations based on location and interests for helping. Our focus on passions is different. Many initiatives either start with people from a group and try to connect with other groups or address those considered as in need. We start without preconceived ideas except the idea of shared passions and interests and work with city administrations and all types of organisations, offline and online, to reach many people. We start from passions that they share so they can discover that other people who they might have considered as different based on other criteria are just like them in that passion. All people can share , be included and respected. We also want to respect privacy. Only first name and top 3 passions will be shared. The online platform may be updated to include more info, but only at the request and with the agreement of the people.

Idea Proposal Stage (choose one)

  • Initial Design: I am exploring the idea, gathering the inspiration and information I need to test it with real users.
  • Prototype: I have done some small tests or experiments with prospective users to continue developing the idea.

Tell us more about your organization/company (1 sentence and website URL)

We developed this idea at a recent hackathon with a group of people who did not know eachother before. We made our own PositiveIDs and already found the first matches.

Expertise in sector

  • 3-5 years

Organization Filing Status

  • No, but we plan to register in the future.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

We developed this idea answering a challenge given by the Mayor of Mechelen in Belgium. He was already chosen best mayor in 2017 for initiatives that have made his city diverse and inclusive but he was still interested in new approaches.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

Peace and prosperity are only possible where people can connect, live and work together without divides.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

We will involve the city administrations, schools and other organisations. Eg we contacted the city of Antwerp. They have tested the PositiveID as an ice breaker for groups of new inhabitants, with stickers and pictograms representing passions and interests that participants in their first meeting can choose and attach to their name tag and then start a conversation with the other participants. This department shared their first feedback from their experience: - assure easy access for all citizens with pictograms - physical ID card should be pretty, so people want to show it, are proud to share it - pictograms to overcome language difficulties - useful for events and conventions, meetings of non profits - connect with volunteer organisations - link organisations with passions

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

We believe that each city community is rich in passions and interests but many are poor in connections across divides. We have found that the groups that we contacted were very interested in a way to facilitate first contacts that bridges language barriers.

Geographic Focus

We start where we live, in the cities and communities, schools,.. in Belgium, a country in Europe.

How many months are required for the project idea? (500 characters)

Field tests with cardboard cards and stickers have already started in Antwerp (city official with small groups of newcomers) and Bruges (greater group from different religions). We have municipal elections in Autumn this year, we want to reach out to the new mayors and city councils with the results of these tests for pilots in their cities beginning in 2019 and get discovered by many more by 2021.

Did you submit this idea to our 2017 BridgeBuilder Challenge? (Y/N)

  • No
