Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

The Nevado de Colima Expedition seeks to explore the feasibility and possibilities of a long distance hiking trail that circumnavigates the Nevado de Colima National Park in western Mexico and the local economic and conservation benefits and cultural exchange the trail could provide. While the Nevado de Colima National Park was created in 1936 and consists primarily of conifer-oak forest at elevations above 2,500 meters, an adjacent State Park was created in 2009 along the ridges of Nevado de Colima and Volcán de Colima that consists largely of community land and intact stands of montane cloud forest. The Expedition project intends to explore possible routes, overnight locations, and other critical biodiversity, cultural, and historical assets. The Expedition also seeks to explore communities’ interest to participate in a community-based natural resource management approach, actively contribute to biodiversity conservation, and invest in ecotourism. The Expedition team will explore market demand for such an ecotourism product among international and national tourists and begin the process of documenting local stories and history. The desired result of the Expedition project is a feasibility analysis and proposed design options for a long distance hiking trail that measures, documents and understands market demand, local capacity for ecotourism enterprise and biodiversity conservation, regional culinary and cultural traditions and historical interest stories, and biodiversity data. The intention is also to gain community buy-in for the project and outline next steps, analyze, and gather material to fundraise and build the trail and infrastructure in the coming years.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

State and National Park managers, rural communities around the mountain, state and national government, University of Guadalajara, foreign tourists

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

This idea aims to bring together low cost technologies, storytelling methodologies, community monitoring and vigilance, community science, agricultural and rural tourism to achieve peace, conservation, and economic outcomes.

Idea Proposal Stage (choose one)

  • Initial Design: I am exploring the idea, gathering the inspiration and information I need to test it with real users.

Tell us more about your organization/company (1 sentence and website URL)

I work with two organizations and would look to develop this idea with the Patronato Nevado de Colima, Nevado de Colima Park Board - http://nevadodecolima.org/ or my US based employer - Conservation X Labs

Expertise in sector

  • 3-5 years

Organization Filing Status

  • No, but we plan to register in the future.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

I worked as peace corps volunteer with these communities for two years, and there is a rural and nature tourism opportunity that would help bring economic benefits and justify conservation to communities who see much opportunity in converting the land to grow avocados. I worked closely with one rural community and their ecotourism outfit for one year.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

This part of Mexico is increasingly more suspect to nacro-trafficking and other illegal activities. Encouraging tourism, foreign visitors, and scientific study and celebration of the local culture helps enrich the communities, more people presence in the Parks, and better understanding of the ecology of the area.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

The University of Guadalajara -- Biology Department, other local universities, and local tourism outfits

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

The local university has a sustainable tourism course, the state government is providing some funding to support local tourism, some of the local communities have initial tourism assets (cabins), but need trails and a larger organizing body to help connect the communities.

Geographic Focus

Mexico, state of Jalisco & Colima, and the communities surrounding the Nevado de Colima Park

How many months are required for the project idea? (500 characters)

18 - 24 months

Did you submit this idea to our 2017 BridgeBuilder Challenge? (Y/N)

  • No

If Yes, how has project idea changed, grown, or evolved since last year? (2,000 characters)

I am an American, living in Mexico, with the purpose of providing mobility (wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, canes, etc.) to people with disabilities. Whatever you do, please make all structures, pathways, roads, etc. accessible for all types of disabilities. I'd be happy to help you, as a wheelchair user, with accessibility designs.

Oh awesome. Thats a great idea Richard! And some of the professors that work at the local university are on to the importance of inclusive tourism. Where do you live in Mexico?

I live in the state of Mexico, about a 3 hour drive NW of Mexico City (an hour north of Toluca). I have a sister-in-law who lives in Guadalajara. Maybe the next time we're there you and I can get together.
