Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

We believe that strong social art platforms in a Nation (and world) that is growing younger will provide unlimited opportunities for more inclusive, sustainable citizen engagement, voice and contribute to the creation of a world where Youth creativity and innovation translates into social change and social justice for all.

We therefore seek to create and exploit opportunities for more meaningful involvement of young social artists in different development initiatives by building capacities for creative leadership, innovation, communication, advocacy and social entrepreneurship. We are committed to recruiting, raising and releasing as many Young social artists as possible because they weld the power of influence to affect and effect humanity for better.

The challenge is that emerging youth leaders have been hindered by the social cultural stereo types that create social barriers and indifference between themselves and the elders of the society. Different forms of creative social art have been used to amplify both the success stories and struggles Young people face as they dare to influence their respective societies.

Young people have often been discriminated against due to their social lives, talent and direction to which the view life and the path the take. Society has often times failed to appreciate young peoples’ choice of path through talent and view; yet all this can be turned into an opportunity to influence leadership/governance, culture, discover potentials and resource.

Social art is a great weapon to reach out and influence masses in different aspects of life be it culture, communication, governance etc. The project will promote visual arts through a range of activities and events including touring exhibitions, workshops, festivals, seminars, and conferences.

Social arts platforms will include; Coffee Nights, Visiual Arts, Apps seminars, music and fashion, film, theatre and fashion, touring exhibitions, sports tournaments among others

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

The target beneficiaries for this project will be young women and men aged 15-35 years in all the 5 divisions of Kampala i.e. Rubaga, Kawempe, Makindye, Nakawa and Central region. Participants will be drawn from the informal sector as well as the formal sector like out - of - school youth, school going students, CSOs, CBOs working on growing and nurturing talent of young people and translate this into an economic venture. The informal sector is very vital as these are young people who are engaged in acts like robbery and theft, sex work, drug abuse simply because society does not accept growth of talent like poetry, documentary, music, visual art, applications developers

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

It's uniqueness is drawn from applying the below thematic areas
1. Build strong social art platforms and establishing spaces for self-discovery of students and young people
2. Advance social entrepreneurship and active citizenship for sustainable livelihood transformation within urban Student and Youth communities
3. Developing Information Tools/ Business Support Systems to enable the startup of globally competitive Social Enterprises
4. Fostering learning through celebrating and exchanges within and across communities that are traditionally excluded and marginalized in the development and/or democratization process

In order to achieve success, the methodology used during the implementation of the project is “finding people in their spaces”. Venues will be identified basing on young people’s favorite spots and activities will be tailored as forms or educative entertainment. As institution we use these spaces to create awareness on a particular advocacy issue affecting the nation

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

The idea of advancing creative arts is one of the key issues spelled out in the National Youth manifesto which highlights 5 key issues young people call upon government to address. In the recent past, we have worked on a 3 year project in urban-rural setting in Kampala and whereas the project was tagged to improving their civic awareness capacity, it was brought to our attention that CSOs need to design interventions that nurture and grow young talent which they can use as a source of income.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

Uganda’s population is overwhelmingly young – 78% under the age of 30 – with a high rate of unemployment. Young people are increasingly dissatisfied with their lot and what they see as poor prospects for their future, and many don’t feel their issues are being heard, much less addressed, by the government; yet despite voting for opposition candidates in increasing numbers, are frustrated by the lack of change. Nor are the traditional mechanisms for mediating between the interests and needs of young and old working as they used to, to maintain order, stability and economic growth in many communities. Result: increasing levels of frustration, tension and unrest in cities, often attracting violent – seemingly disproportionate – responses from the security forces which merely serve to increase the tension. Ultimately young people reap from their unique talents and contribute to the country's economic growth. This equally requires government and elders to invest and appreciate modern talent

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

Open Space Center; is a youth-led agency whose business embodies the broadening of space and opportunities for young people to enhance their full potentials and meaningfully contribute to national and global development agendas.
Kampala Capital City Authority; is the legal entity, established by the Ugandan Parliament, that is responsible for the operations of the capital city of Kampala in Uganda.

Partnerships and collaborations withe the above 2 entities is to
1. Give the project legitimacy and enable smooth implementation. Open Space has implemented projects targeting young people from all divides whereas KCCA is a key player as it should give an organization authority to implement a project in the city
2. The project will gain tremendous mileage among the target beneficiaries as well as the policy makers
One of the projects jointly implemented is a Youth Symposium on SGDs which targeted the project target beneficiaries while giving youth a platform to showcase their talent

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

It is estimated that more than 40,000 young people graduate from Ugandan universities each year yet the market can provide only 8,000 jobs annually. despite the high rates of unemployment, Youth in Kampala slums and urban settings are ready to work and have innovative and creative minds. Some of the young people are already engaged in development of brand new ideas despite using backward traditional methods. It is important to note that most of the celebrated musicians have backgrounds from slum

Geographic Focus

It will be implemented in Africa, Uganda, Kampala city targeting its traditional 5 divisions.

How many months are required for the project idea? (500 characters)

I am willing to learn what do you think are your challenges in order to implement this idea? Have you reached out to youth in Uganda and Kampala city with this idea, if yes, what has been their response so far? How do you think you would be able to reach out to larger masses of young social artists with this particular idea? Whats the number of Social artists currently in the region you are trying to work?
