Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

My project idea is to create a volunteer based organization to travel to Tonga to educate students on the proper ways to dispose of trash (recycling, compost, and waste), and help promote a more green way of life on the island to help decrease the amount of trash that is thrown on the streets/ocean. It will work by hosting an assembly at schools around Tonga to educate, offer resources (such as recycle/compost/trash bins), and creating a board at each school to help implement a new system of waste disposal.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

My beneficiaries are young students in Tonga who are not educated on how to properly dispose of waste and on the environmental impacts their waste contributes to the Earth. They will benefit from my idea by becoming educated and aware which will inspire the young students to take charge and make a change. They will benefit from my idea because they will be the ones who make their home, Tonga, a more green island. Through their awareness and education, they will be able to educate others which will progress in everyone knowing the proper way to dispose of waste.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

My idea is different from other or similar initiatives because it will be taking on a more hands on approach with the young students in Tonga. The students get to be educated in an assembly, play games/activities that reinforce the material being taught, will have the tools to implement a new waste disposal system from the donated recycling/compost/trash bins, and will have a board at each school who helps keep the new system of waste in check. My idea has a unique advantage because we are targeting young students who are the new generation that will make change happen. My approach will be most successful compared to similar ideas because it gives the students a chance to take charge and make it their own (i.e with the school recycling board).

Idea Proposal Stage (choose one)

  • Prototype: I have done some small tests or experiments with prospective users to continue developing the idea.

Tell us more about your organization/company (1 sentence and website URL)

My organization as a whole helps educate those in third world countries who have an increasing amount of trash that is filling the streets and oceans, who are uneducated on the correct way to dispose of trash, and who do not have the necessary resources to implement a new waste disposal system.

Expertise in sector

  • 1-2 years

Organization Filing Status

  • Yes, we are a registered non-profit.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

The inspiration that encouraged me to start this project is that I want to make my homeland a clean and green place where trash does not coat the beautiful, lush green land. I am from Tonga, and from personal experience I have seen the amount of trash that is thrown on the streets and ocean. My cousins and so many others in my village throw trash in the streets and oceans not knowing the negative environmental impact they are making.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

Prosperity has been influenced by lack of economic success, and Planet has been impacted by the negative impacts of mismanaged trash which have human, habitat, chemical, and biological impacts.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

The Solid Waste Management project would be engaged in my project idea because they will help go beyond the students but to their parents. The Solid Waste Management project is the perfect partner for my idea because they have helped engineer a new landfill, introduce a regular waste collection, and help educate the community on solid waste and recycling.

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

The community in which my project will serve has competitive advantages because there are a surplus amount of young people who are ready and willing to work. The Tongan community has determined and strong minded individuals who are willing to learn more and help implement a new waste disposal system at their schools. The young students are always wanting a new task to keep them driven and focused to achieving a goal.

Geographic Focus

My idea targets the island of Tonga.

How many months are required for the project idea? (500 characters)

My project will need at least 3 years because of the amount of organization needed to go in, planning, scheduling with schools, getting volunteers, travelling all over Tonga to different schools, raising money for the resources, and so much more.

Hi Victoria! I really like your project and how personal it is to you. Waste management and proper trash disposal are so important. I also agree that engaging students and the community is super important for the success of such efforts. Have you considered other places that this project could be effective? You might consider testing the teaching methods out on kids here before going over to fine tune everything.
