Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

As mentioned in our title "GREEN ECONOMY" wherein it increases the production of fruits and flowers. It act as a green coverage in the heart of the cities acting as a carbon sink.
Our organization is in the system of planting tree on roadside. We have started within nearby local areas and and we are increasing it day by day in collaboration with local schools, education institutions and community workers because we believe that there are plenty of benefits of road-side tree planting. Firstly, Fruit tree planting which have a long life and can offer vast green canopy. We plant little grown up fruit trees of 2 to 3 years' age. Prior to this we do fruit tree saplings in nearby nurseries. Little grown up fruit trees are suited for local environment and are planted @350 to 400 trees per KM on the sides of national highways, state highways along with district and rural roads on both side because for planting of fruit trees no new land is required to be acquired. Secondly, Employment opportunities. Self employment opportunities for local inhabitants is being created by engaging many individuals irrespective of man & woman for planting, caring and protection of these trees allotted them specifically area-wise. Along with this owners and workers of local nurseries are also getting benefited for preparing saplings and supplying fruit trees of 2-3 years of age. The local inhabitants, looking after trees are permitted to sell the fruits but not permitted to own or sell the tree. Thirdly, Environmental protection. These fruit trees offer problem of oxygen deficiency in the environment. Erosion of land of roads are also getting arrested. Falling leaves are used as manure to boost fertility of soil. Not only these, birds are getting shelter on the trees and eat up harmful insects and thus have save use of pesticides.
Our project will undertake capacity building of different communities along the roadside including elders, woman and intellectual groups to solve their challenges.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

As mentioned earlier the beneficiaries are local inhabitants and their family, friends and relatives. Here the beneficiaries have the yearly employment generation like for every kilometer having 300 to 400 trees on both sides of the road and about 4 person are required to nourish and protect, guard and keeping the fruits and trees intact. When the fruits will be ripe and ready for marketing, some more persons will be required.Local people are getting engaged as area wise for self employed caretakers for planting, caring and protecting the fruit trees.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

Our initiative is unique because the people will not be permitted to own or sell those trees, neither they will be permitted to have right of the land used. Ownership of these trees shall lie with the government. Some other good things about this idea are Utilization of unsed land. 1 hectare = 10,000 sq.m. For a single fruit tree approx.25 sq.m land is reuired. So, 10,000 sq.m / 25 = 400 fruit trees per hectare of land will be utilized. Next are self employment for upkeepment, marketing and for nursery for the rural people. For example 8000 persons(2000 KM * 4 persons per KM). Thus our above idea of planting fruit trees by side of all surface and unsurface roads provide not only the fruits and flowers for consumption and selling but also a major source of employment for unemployed people without incurring much expenditure and we are wondering a healthy extension through collaboration on this project. Our ideas is different because it depicts that no new land is required.

Idea Proposal Stage (choose one)

  • Prototype: I have done some small tests or experiments with prospective users to continue developing the idea.

Other activities of the institute are environmental awareness plans. GERF is associated with various NGO’s level work. our URL is http://www.gerfkalyani.org

Expertise in sector

  • 3-5 years

Organization Filing Status

  • Yes, we are a registered non-profit.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

We have seen in the newspaper &/or electronic, print media that conflict/violence causes civil unrest, disruption of social services & economic downturn regularly. Whole world is trying to restore the social disintegration as well as peace to protect the planet from violence & conflict. I think how really restoration of peace can be achieved through proper engagement of civil society, individual, human capital energy investment by low cost investment with a larger implementation of project.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

Today, Unemployment and climate change both are two big issues. Deforestation is increasing day by day in almost every part of world resulting increase in temperature and here comes the novel duty of planting trees. In India itself due to cutting of trees, air pollution is increasing rapidly and leads to hole in ozone layer. In other hand there is question How much oxygen we consume? Each adult person inhale about 16 kg of air per day which contain minimum 3 kg of oxygen(20% of air) having current market value is approx. Rs. 210. Thus Indian population of over 120 crores consume 120*3 kg crores of oxygen per day costing(120*3*210) = 75600. Next Removal of SPM, CO2, SO2 from air. these are some most harmful gases present in air. Planting of roadside trees will definitely decrease the expenditure on the removal of these gases. Lastly, Shelter of birds, squirrels, insects etc. These plays a great role. They eat up the harmful insects which saves the cost of different pesticides.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

We have projected the project in such a way that project should be a single entity but it should have a cyclical chain wherein the earning potential will be huge. Commonly the local goons taking the opportunity of the people who are poor and reside alongside of road, railway side and they are forced to combat their social and economic problems.
From this I started this project where segment wise employability will be there. The poor people will engage and further they will not be involved in violence/conflict. If these people are engaged then they will be happy to maintain the livelihood and their daily needs. If they are happy in their daily life, they can make happy to others as well. In this way the peace, prosperity for the planet can be achieved.
In this project there is low financial investment and the local government will also have intent to get engage the people in this way because of their interest.

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

The strengths are as follows
• Self employment generation
• Low cost investment
• Government intent project
• Coping with climate change issue.
• Green Coverage on all surface & unsurface roads
• Remedy for environmental air pollution
• Prevention of erosion of roads
• Production of 80,000 tons fruits per year
• Production of huge quantity of oxygen
• No new land to be acquired
• Earning of foreign exchange.
• The water consumption and manpower involvement is minimum.

Geographic Focus

In most of the cities in India.

How many months are required for the project idea? (500 characters)

Gestation period for these tree is minimum one year.

Did you submit this idea to our 2017 BridgeBuilder Challenge? (Y/N)

  • Yes

If Yes, how has project idea changed, grown, or evolved since last year? (2,000 characters)

In the year 2017, we have just initiated our present project. As mentioned above we are looking and projecting our project for connectivity & collaboratively for ecological balancing and sustainable development of our planet. As mentioned above about the strengths, not only those, there is the work of flowering as well wherein the flowers are being used for bio compost, preparation of scent and Incense sticks which act as a step up programme for the poor people who are engaged in conflict and violence. If we apply this project in different states and areas there would be economic boon worth crores of rupees.Globally, conflict and violence costs a lot and lot. There are few available assessments that suggests lack of clarity about inadequate money allocation for infrastructure and there is little awareness about civil society, poor and underprivileged. Our project is systematic approach for economical viability, transformation and ecological balance because we all know reducing violence is not only morally imperative but can help us to become more productive and generate benefits. Once again the projected benefits are being shown as 1)Self employment for upkeepment 8000persons,2) For Marketing 1000 persons, 3)For nursery 640 persons 4) Production of fruits 8000tonnes per year. Thus, the above plan of planting fruits tree by the side of surface and unsurface road of the country if implemented, self employment for 10,000(approx.)rural persons can be generated and gauranteed without incurring much expenditure on the part of the government. Further, We expect that if this idea is being implemented within entire the India, crores of people will get engaged and if it goes for the World then the billions of people will be engaged. Finally, as we know giving life to a plant is same as giving life to thousand of other livings like human beings, birds, insects etc. Our initiative not only benefits the environment but also help us to maintain our peace and prosperity.
