Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

This idea is based off of children in foster care to create a nursery program that educates them on the caregiving of plants and what it takes to grow your own food. This would probably be from the ages 6-18 or however the age ranges in foster care. Resources needed would probably be a local garden or youth center maybe if it isn’t possible to have a personal garden within the home and educators to educate the children on basic and simple world knowledge on the environment. Some of the main causes that have lead to these needs would be the extra care and nurture for those in foster homes. A place to exercise the human instinct to care for a living being (in this instance plants). This could take place at a local community center or per individual foster house which would be more costly of course. I believe this will provide a sense of building community and help to those in foster care by reserving an area stricting to tending and taking care of plants to grow into resourceful food. This installment would be a community effort and involve the whole community in order to work well.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

The beneficiaries of this project would be the children in foster care and maybe even foster parents. This will not only educate the children on real life environmental issues but teach them to tend to plants and grow their own food.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

My idea is unique because although there are basic community gardens for cities and maybe even foster homes, not all have an additional educational program that extend the learning beyond tending to the plants.

Idea Proposal Stage (choose one)

  • Initial Design: I am exploring the idea, gathering the inspiration and information I need to test it with real users.

Tell us more about your organization/company (1 sentence and website URL)

Not part of an organization. Just part of an assignment for my school's environmental science class.

Expertise in sector

  • 1-2 years

Organization Filing Status

  • No, but we plan to register in the future.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

I wanted to work with a community of people that I feel is overlooked in society and needs just as much love as care put into as any other population.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

My idea was bridging together peace and planet by bringing a project of community to foster homes and doing it sustainably along the way (such as using recycled materials for planters and rain water or wasted cold water from sinks to water plants). There will need lots of community effort in order to make this possible but I believe the payoff will turn out amazing.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

The city that would host the community garden or the individual foster home, depending.

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

This community tends to be overpopulated and in need for a community effort project to get the kids involved, outside, and learning. Some of the strengths would be the push to get this passed by foster homes around the country, as the need for a project like this has been lacking.

Geographic Focus

locally starting in the Bay Area, California.

How many months are required for the project idea? (500 characters)

maybe 2-3 years, roughly estimating.

Did you submit this idea to our 2017 BridgeBuilder Challenge? (Y/N)

  • No

Summer, I love the community that you chose to focus on. I think often time the foster community is overlooked and not well supported. I think a major piece of that is lack of oversight into the foster system and not enough social workers to adequately check in on all children needing foster support. I love the idea of bring gardening and food education into the system. What a great way to build community and a love and appreciate for food and life. I wish there was more information on how the program could work and what the need of the program would entail.
