CIVIL SOCIETY GROUPS USE HUMANITARIAN CONVOY TO STOP MASSIVE KILLINGS IN BENUE STATE AND MIDDLE BELT.

In recent times,from first quarter of 2018 to date,over 600 persons have been killed in the Benue Axis,This rate is alarming and disturbing.

In the past five years, The Records of killings in Benue State by Either the headsmen or unknown killers have risen to an intolerable numbers, The trajectory of herdsmen killings in Benue and other environs, example, Taraba. Nassarawa, Plateau, Adamawa, Kwara, Kaduna and Kogi States have risen exponentially with monumental loss of lives. recording casualties of over 1,878 deaths within 6 months. Beyond Benue State and its environs, the spake of killings have been extended to far away Zamfara State. These spade of killings if not checked will have great negative impacts on Citizens The after math of these killings is that farmers no longer go to farms and there are threats of food insecurity, Massive hunger and unemployment, increased malnutrition and resistance of Citizens towards Governance, increased  riots and civil disobedience. To worsen the scenario, the Government have been non compliant and do not give adequate security or account for dead and missing persons. With the failure of the security apparatus and wanton disregard of human lives and the compromising positions of the service chiefs. There is likelihood of severe breakdown of law and anarchy will take over the Country. To Stem this negative tide, there is need for a concerted effort to bring peace to the troubled land. The Civil Society have been a neutral body to these happenings and as concerned Citizens, We cannot longer wait to see more people die. This situation have prompted several meetings towards placarding the bereaved and aggrieved Communities. The strategy suggested will be to stop the killings by visits to the sites and by intervention in mediation. This will be made possible by creating a humanitarian convoy from the Federal Capital territory to the desecrated sites where the killings have been going on. This if archived will create an international awareness and possible supports from the civilized Countries for example United States of America.  

Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

The project idea is an advocacy toll created as a panacea to stem the wanton killings, burning of homes and destruction of farms. The project is to create awareness, advocate for justice to be done to the oppressed people of the middle belt and to attract public sympathy and international organizations support to stem the killings in Benue State and the middle belt zone. This can work by international Organizations and Countries sending their troops to fight terrorism. Major activities entail mapping the routes where the terrorists operate using GPS and sending troupes along the river banks which have been a major access to the communities by terrorists. This can be done using an arial map of Benue and its geographic map. From studies undertaken in the crises thorn zones,The killings have been happening along the creeks and River Banks.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

There are direct and indirect beneficiaries an example is the Communities who are affected directly. The farmers whose crops were vandalized, the Fishermen who could not hitherto do there fishing business, The Citizens who are denied access to daily food and there means of livelihood. The farmers who lost opportunities to do their business, Relatives who lost their family members and did not have opportunity to accord them decent burials and the entrepreneurs who may have been affected by the crises.

The difference between the idea is the strength in numbers of Organizations who are partnering to achieve the set goals. These Organizations have diverse capacities, Opportunities and Partnerships. All this put together makes them formidable.

We were encouraged due to the effect of the killings on farmers. Effects of cattle grassing on farmlands and the Economic Consequences to the entire Communities and State. Above all we were worried by the no action of the Government.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

Our project in Bayelsa is Rice Planting in the midst of Environmental pollution This is a difficult project because we first started with land remediation by planting legumes. We were determined to empower the Women and we went ahead to build a bridge of confidence by going through the tough terrain and by the second year of our project we started harvesting Rice in tonnes. This have really impacted positively on enhancing the livelihood of the Communities where we work. This was really a big break through and a motivating point in our struggles.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

Our Partners in this project are going to be our old partners who work in the areas of Oil explorations, Oil Drilling Companies, Community land owners, Chiefs and traditional rulers. Women groups and women farmers, Women in Agribusiness, Youths and young graduates, Marketers and processors and many other interest groups and beneficiaries.The Communities are, Nembe , Basambari , Olomabiri, Otueke and 5 other communities. The result of this project in a re branded community outlooks. Development of Partnerships and synergies, Awareness creation and capacity building. Opening up the Communities to trade and infrastructure development. An example is the Bayelsa Women Rice Farmers Project we did in record time in Bayelsa State from year 2012 to 2014. This have a massive out put and benefit.

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

The Strengths identified in the Communities are young Women in the youthful age who are eager to work, These women also have young families. The youths of school leaving age and able bodied and vast lands that can be revived and treated with natural means and which can grow food and fisheries in hundreds of tonnes. Also an advantage is the Gate keepers or leadership of the communities and chiefs. They cooperated very well with us during our engagements at the Communities. And vast opportinitie

The geographic coverage is Bayelsa State in South South of Nigeria, In West Africa in the SubSaharan

How many months are required for the project idea? (500 characters)

The project will be carried on as follows, 3 months of sensitization and advocacy, six months of land survey and land clearing, 3 months of land preparation and planting, Another three months of within weeding and harvesting. The likely farm produce to be experimented is RICE, because of its market popularity and demand in the next eighteen months we must have done six rounds of planting and harvesting.
