Building Life bridges for future generations...Protecting the dreams of unborn children
Building partnerships to establish Adaption Clinics to help mothers in unplanned pregnancy crises choose Life for their unborn babies.
Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)
Project Idea: Partner with the church community in Zimbabwe to establish Adaption Clinics. These clinics will offer services which include: 1)Biblical based counselling for individuals and families. 2) Linkage to health facilities. 3)Linkage to legal facilities for adoption. 4) linkage to appropriate economic empowerment opportunities for each woman where needed. 5)Linkage to a support group.
Challenge: Zimbabwean legislators and some citizens have begun discussing, the possibility of changes to the termination of pregnancy act. Proponents for legalizing abortion are citing health complications resulting from women opting for unsafe abortions as a cause of concern in addition to women's sexual and reproductive rights. Zimbabwe is a predominantly Christian nation with strong moral values influenced by Biblical principles and this issue is likely to bring polarization between various groups in the nation.
The Bridge: The idea proposes to work towards peace and prosperity with the Christian Church Community taking a leading role in establishing Adaption Clinics within their communities to address the challenges faced by women in a pregnancy crises holistically; spirit soul and body.
The Adaption Clinics manned by trained Christian counselors from the church community will function as transition centers and help the woman adapt to either becoming an unplanned mother or giving the child up for adoption. Making these services accessible provides viable alternatives to abortion for the women.
How it works
Our Organisation will help build partnerships with churches and the Christian Community willing to establish these Adaption Clinics in their communities as an extension of their mission work. The organisation will help design a training program for the counselors and in the design and establishment of the Adaption Clinic model. Working with established churches within the community ensures sustainability of the project even after the end of the project.
Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)
Our direct beneficiaries are the unborn children of women in crises pregnancy situations such as adolescent pregnancy, rape, unplanned pregnancy in or outside a marriage in the the 10 provinces of Zimbabwe, who get a chance at life. Our indirect beneficiaries include the mothers who are likely to suffer emotional trauma and risk prosecution(in the case of illegal termination of pregnancy) after choosing abortion. Finally the entire nation benefits from the preservation of lives of future leaders and solution bearers.
How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)
The idea proposes a reproducible model in which the church community in specific geographical areas takes ownership of the project given its influential status in the country( More than 85% of Zimbabweans are reportedly Christian) and in order to ensure sustainability versus having a particular organization run the project, with the risk of faltering should funds run out. Our organization is a for profit consultancy oriented organization, which focuses on social impact with a strong emphasis on reproductive, maternal, child and family health with strong Christian values and a strong network of consultant obstetricians & Gynaecologists, paediatricians, midwives, public health specialists, social scientists as well as church networking platforms at its disposal. Our Faith, relational nature, professional experience, complimentarity and diversity are unique characteristics that gives us a holistic perspective set us up for success in this project.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.
While working as a gynaecologist at a major hospital in Zimbabwe, I came across a 14 year old girl who transformed my life and sent me on a deep introspection journey on my beliefs regarding abortion. She was an orphan who had been raped by her maternal uncle but adamantly refused to terminate the pregnancy(even though she this was legally permissible under Zimbabwean law on the grounds of rape and incest). She firmly stated"the child has done no wrong'' and declined to consent for abortion.
Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).
Peace is largely influenced by the Church in Zimbabwe. Historically the church has played a significant role in peace negotiations at any level in this nation from individual inner peace, to family, community all the way to national peace negotiations and even in determining the national constitution. The right to life supersedes all other rights according to the national constitution. The economic status of girls and women is a significant influencing factors in matters to do with sexual and reproductive choices in Zimbabwe. Again the church plays a significant role in contributing towards the prosperity of the nation, with the church running a significant number of both educational and health institutions to compliment government efforts.
Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)
In addition to the church community, our organization will work with the Ministry of Health and Child Care as some women requiring counselling may seek their services following such incidences as rape. The Organization will also work with civil society organizations involved in similar work as well as community leaders, the department of social welfare, legal organizations, educators and co-operate partners interested in co-operate social responsibility in this area. Our organization will also play a facilitator between various organizations to foster long lasting community relationships. In the example I mentioned of the time I was working at a hospital, we contacted a Christian organization which dealt with vulnerable girls in crises situations and they took in the 14 year old mother, provided her with food and shelter while training her in vocational skills to improve her livelihood to enable her to take care of her child. She also had the option of continuing with her education.
