Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

Buen Provecho is a three-phase program, designed by El Transformador (NGO) to avoid, prevent and reduce food waste in grocery stores, neighborhoods and homes between 2018-2028. These three phases generate experiences in mitigation of Climate Change, Circular Economy, Sustainability, Composting, Green Jobs, Low Carbon Cities and Green Markets through Social Innovation, Waste Awareness and Responsible Consumption. We’re food rescuers inviting people to take home those fruits, vegetables, etc. who were rejected in the grocery store. It’s an open source program for easy replication, implementing a solution in communities to achieve #ZeroHunger. We believe in Sustainability, Abundance, #ZeroWaste and Free Emissions Logistics. We want to reduce food waste in cities thanks to good consumption practices implementation and optimal waste management through composting. BUEN PROVECHO PHASES 1. RESCUE AND RECIRCULATION Alliances - Food Rescue - Disposition in Space & Awareness 2. CONVERSION Partnerships with Chefs & Cooking Schools - Making Snacks - Delivery in agreed places 3. FOOD AND PRODUCT DESIGN Product Creation - Marketing & Green Jobs - Application for mobile devices ¿HOW DO WE DO? We rescue and transport food without emissions using cargo-bikes. We take the food to "Buen Provecho" points where people, without distinction, can use and benefit from it. We also compose avoiding 100% waste and being coherent with the sustainability cycle that we propose. We detect the place that is generating the waste. We expose the program to generate the alliance that makes possible the collection of the material. We select in-situ. We transport the food in cargo-bikes to the headquarters of El Transformador and we compose the unused sections in case if necessary to close the loop. Our main goal is redefine the concept “garbage” in peoples lives and collective imagination. All organic waste is cyclic material of biological and nutritional value.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

>> Civil Society: People who participate in the program take the food and draw it on. Advantage of the food, which they use to feed street dwellers to students and entrepreneurs or average citizens. It is a common and collective benefit, for all. >> Supply centers, market squares, grocery stores, neighborhood stores and homes that reduce the impact of their work to responsibly manage their waste. >> Entrepreneurs, Universities, Community Eaters, Social works or communities vulnerable to those found in food. >> Public and Private Sector.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

Because it is highly replicable, in all places there are people, and there is waste. Work on the issue of waste from an approach of abundance to share, with a social and also ecological and economic vision. We are always interested not only in reducing waste, but also promoting the sale of balances, composting, and the rescue of food by people and institutions. This program can achieve urban peace for many communities, and knowledge and awareness of access to food, which is a teaching for life.

Idea Proposal Stage (choose one)

  • Pilot: I have started to implement the idea as a whole with a first set of real users.

Tell us more about your organization/company (1 sentence and website URL)

El Transformador is an NGO that makes sustainability and Circular Economy possible in different contexts, connecting cities, companies, events and homes with sustainable solutions that bring the possibility of new economic systems -circular- and market, and with them, lifestyles of minor impact. We create ideas for change, campaigns, accompany the public and private sectors and design action programs aimed at the SDGs. What we seek and enable are intelligent cities and communities.

Expertise in sector

  • 1-2 years

Organization Filing Status

  • Yes, we are a registered non-profit.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

We work everyday with sustainable solutions and one of the most worrying topics is Wastefulness. We think there’s no place for Hunger and Food Waste. We could feed 8 million people (the population of Bogotá) with all the food waste in Colombia; the waste occurs in all its stages, from the harvest to the consumer; and while 9.7 million tons of FOOD go to the garbage and to the fills, many get sick and die of starvation. People without distinction can take home the rescued food!

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

PLANET: The waste of food contributes to the greenhouse gases by over-exploitation of resources. Therefore, one of the most important global solutions to mitigate climate change is to reduce this problem, so that cities can reach more organized and efficient habits through practices such as responsible consumption and composting promoted in Buen Provecho. PEACE: Collective action achieves a more solid social architecture and one of its effects is the low differences level. Food works as a peacemaker because everyone in the chain collaborates with a final goal that benefits everyone. Making teams for rescue process, selection, transformation and sale, makes the difference go down and there are no conflicts within the community. PROSPERITY: Entrepreneurship is a consequence of this program. Seeks to generate Green Jobs due to rescued food. The main goal is design new products and services from the food waste. Converting food into jams, chucruts or even a Catering service.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

We're working with sustainable entrepreneurs, NGO's and the of Teusaquillo local mayor (Goberment). They are supporting us with communication, volunteers, cargo-bikes, compost process and other tools for the program can be real. Otherwise, communities and litlle towns are now beneficiaries from the program. We're working in Chía, a little town near from Bogotá, and 4 families are eating everyday thanks to the program. Venezuelan Immigrants and poor people too. We've saved around 1 food waste TON and saved around 200 kg. CO2.

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

That we do it openly, with attitude of abundance for all, without vertical approach, if not collaborative and also beneficial for all; with pedagogical attitude; the work is always in a group and totally inclusive, we implement collective action with other institutions and people permanently; and the waste of food is transversal to all the issues of the life of a community, and at any age or capacity, everyone can contribute, as well as begin to understand sustainability thanks to this topic.

Geographic Focus

"Buen Provecho" is located in Bogotá, Colombia. We're also attending Chía and other neighborhoods.

How many months are required for the project idea? (500 characters)

24 months = 1 "Buen provecho" point in the main cities of Colombia. In this sense to 36 months would be the opening of at least one point in every capital city in Colombia, and one for every two localities in Bogotá, that is, 40 new points.

Did you submit this idea to our 2017 BridgeBuilder Challenge? (Y/N)
