In Zimbabwe there are a lot of cases of child marriages due to religious, social and cultural ideologies that have normalised the idea. The girl child falls victim to this due to economic and social problems that emanate from homes. Most of the children are orphans and vulnerable children( street kids and children of homeless families) who have no social backbone/support and lack adequate protection

When these children are removed by welfare agencies they will be parents of children who are a product of the marriage. There has yet to be an organisation or agency which has fully dedicated itself in helping the children with psychosocial, economic, educational support needed for them to adjust and regain a life in society. Hence as a group of professionals ( social work undegraduates and students, teachers e.t.c) we have noted this gap and challenge faced by the children and seek to address it through adequate funding. We aim to help the girl child.

Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

The project idea is to help victims of child marriage adjust back into society after having gone through abuse, victimisation and exclusion. The project aims to address the challenge of gender equality and social exclusion. Victims of child marriage after being removed from the place of danger often face social exclusion and stigmatisation. They find it difficult to adjust back into society as either children or mothers. They lack opportunities such as education, economic and enterpreneurship opportunities as they are not offered these and society deems them adults capable of taking care of themselves and their children hence leading them into an impoverished state with poor living conditions We plan to identify the victims through government agencies and organisations such as childline. From there the girls will choose to either continue with school, or trained vocational skills or select courses to attain entrepreneurship skills. In communities that have high rates of child marriages we seek to work with them in solving the difficulties faced by the victims and involving their families as well.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

Our beneficiaries are girls aged 13-18 years of age who are opharns and vulnerable children (street kids and children of homeless families). We will be working district government welfare agencies in helping identify the victims and with organisations such as Childline, and those who deal with homeless families and street children. The children will get an opportunity to get back to school, attain vocational skills and entrepreneurship skills to help them adapt and live their lives. They will also be helped with psychosocial support through support groups and professionals

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

This idea is different because it seeks to fill the gap that is left by government agencies and organisations such as Childline when they remove the children from the marriages. There is a lack of places of safety for these girls and after being removed the Agencies face the burden of having to find what to do with them and lack the resources. We aim to bring a collective awareness of this problem and contribute in solving it through the fund. Human capital is the advantage we hold...with a group of volunteers willing to assist with manpower. My approach will be successful in bringing about a sustainable solution in each and every girl child we will identify.

When I was working as an intern at the district department of social services In 2017 June of last year, I dealt with a case of a child who was removed from a child marriage and the major challenge was finding a place of safety for her. She was now destitute andthe government institution had zero resources, the first place of safety lacked psychosocial support and she became a delinquent living on the streets with a baby. The case was unsolved ending with the child being placed in an old people's

Hi Barbara. Thank you for working to support those who have been victims of child marriage. Child marriage is often considered a form of human trafficking. Is there anyone in Kweke that works with trafficking victims? If yes, there might be partnering opportunities there.
