Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

In Northeast Nigeria, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities bear the brunt of the multiple impact of the current crisis. Most of displaced families have very limited resources to cope with and need urgent livelihood support. In these communities, many of the survivors are farmers, and while trying to rebuild their lives they lack the necessary resource they needed to thrive. They suffers extremely low productivity, due to reliance upon age-old farming techniques and limited access to financing. Only 2% of Nigeria’s smallholder farmers have access to financing or credit, limiting their ability to expand or improve their farms. Even farmers who can access credit are limited by problems with timely loan disbursement and very high interest rates. Furthermore, there is no easy means to connect these farmers to markets. Birdpreneur aims to build bridges between these communities and the outside world by providing these internally displaced farmers in the poultry, livestock and crop production space with an alternative means to acquire financing to expand or improve their farms by providing them with access to micro-insurance, investors, and buyers. Birdpreneur’s platform allows potential investors worldwide to find farms to invest in and provides them with real-time updates to follow their investments to fruition. Birdpreneur has a ready market for all supported farm projects. Farm sponsors/investors can get between 6-25% returns on their initial sponsorship after harvest depending on the type of farm they sponsor in 3-12 months. This create a win win win scenario for everyone.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

Our beneficiaries are smallholder farmers and their families who have been displaced starting in the northeastern, Nigeria. Birdpreneur is passionate about equipping the farmers that we work with by giving them on-the-ground advice from our field assistants. These assistants also give them (farmers) training on better agricultural practices and provide them with quality input through our strategic partnership with known input providers for the betterment of their farms. All of these add up to creating holistically better-managed farms and retention of agricultural production, which paves the way for better profits for all parties involved. It also facilitates the interest and involvement in agribusiness as a sector worth investing in by big and small-scale investors alike.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

People with extra funds (working class, impact investors within the Nigerian local communities) are excited about getting involved in agriculture, unfortunately they do not have the time, or experience and skill to invest successfully in the sector. They do however, possess the resources. It was a question of understanding how these resources could be channeled in a way that both positively impacts the lives of thousands small-scale farmers in Nigeria who have extra farmlands, but do not have the finances to expand their farm operations to boost food production. We set out to bridge this gap and build this marketplace by setting up Birdpreneur. By connecting more than 10,000 small-scale farmers with unique sponsors through the Birdpreneur website, Birdpreneur has built a community model that allows more people to venture into agriculture at the touch of a button, while empowering local farmers, building bridges and boosting production and security of food for Nigeria.

Inspired by Mohammed a 31-year-old farmer who fled his hometown three years ago, immediately after his neighbors were attacked by Boko Haram insurgents. Since then, he has been living with his family in the Kasesa IDP camp, in Yobe state. After his arrival, even though he felt relieved to have found a safe place to live, he felt trapped in a spiral of destitution. This year, Mohammed got a sponsor from Birdpreneur who invested on his farm for a little percentage of the profit.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

Peace, prosperity, and the planet has been greatly impacted by the bokoharam insurgency in the northeastern part of Nigeria and has specifically hurt the agricultural community. Since 2009, insecurity in the North-East of Nigeria has led to the loss of over 20,000 lives and the displacement of over two million people. Throughout the region livelihoods have been disrupted, and homes, public buildings and infrastructure destroyed. In a part of Nigeria where 80 percent of people rely on agriculture for their livelihoods, much has been lost. People have been forced from their land and livestock has been killed. The challenge faced by farmers/IDPs was huge and more humanitarian assistance is needed to bring back normalcy.

Northern part of Nigeria is going through a significant phase of population growth, characterized by urbanization. As a result, there will be an increased demand for food. Agritech is however a key component in the development and shift towards creating smart-farming and intelligent systems of funding and operating farms even in rural communities, which in turn will enable us to make strides towards solving the challenges of food security and food production in Nigeria and across Africa.
