Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

Aquaculture in the northern Syrian region, without soil through the use of food, or so-called (Hydroponic) technology, which can raise the rate of agricultural production in non-natural seasons, and overcome the challenges of climate and the difficulties of agriculture in the region despite the war.
Greenhouses, irrigation tanks, cooling systems and feeder solutions, as well as providing an appropriate environment and appropriate lighting to support plant growth.
The seedlings should be planted in agricultural circles on the condition that these circles are good drainage, ventilation and has the ability to retain water, it is important it is free of injuries and pathological lesions, insects and harmful salts.
It also contributes to overcoming many problems such as soil poverty, plant exposure to soil diseases, immediate control of food content, salinity and acidity, and the lack of preparation of soil before planting, where agriculture can be carried on shelves or inside the pipes on a limited area, Which is not suitable for agriculture, the first and last dependence is on the food provided by the plant and not on the soil, and therefore there are many advantages of hydropnics technology that lead to high productivity of vegetables and fruits and the diversity of aquaculture products to include:
Cucumbers, tomatoes, red peppers, colored melons, strawberries and lettuce, a local production of high quality and efficiency.
Aquaculture is one of the innovative methods of agriculture without the need for soil, that is, it depends on water by providing all the plant's needs for growth. This method was invented for houses that do not have soil, salty soil or severe desertification.
Aquaculture depends on the light and warmth of the plant, as well as the necessary nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and other food provided to the plant by a solution, and the most important solutions are the main solution used in large hydroponics, which need 5000 liters of water.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

The local market and the people of the region
The two mentioned segments need income resources in light of the absence and scarcity of materials inside Syria and the search for decent and sustainable livelihoods.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

Aquaculture is an environmentally friendly technology that can be used to grow any type of plant using a scientifically well-balanced diet. Cultivation technology without soil is not just an addition to ordinary soil cultivation but a complement to it. One hectare can produce between 200 and 300 tonnes of vegetables a year. More than five to ten times the production of any commercially grown crop in open fields.
Contribution to self-sufficiency in the north of Syria.
Bridging the gap that hit agricultural crops due to the migration of farmers and the reluctance of some to practice agriculture.
Increase in job opportunity.
Savings in economic consumption (for water, fertilizers and costs).

Idea Proposal Stage (choose one)

  • Initial Design: I am exploring the idea, gathering the inspiration and information I need to test it with real users.

  • Yes, we are a registered non-profit.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

The idea of aquaculture has been used on a small scale and limited possibilities by applying the idea to another area that has been besieged inside Syria. Today, after studying the whole project with specialists and experts, the idea of aquaculture has been proposed as an important resource for citizens and IDPs coming from several regions inside Syria.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

Attention to the development of the agriculture sector in the north of Syria is an urgent need, by adopting the best agricultural practices and modern technologies and agricultural development, which seeks to create an integrated and sustainable agricultural environment, "Aquaculture" without soil through the use of food (Hydroponics) is an advanced environmental concept and pioneering experience in the world, which can raise the rate of agricultural production in non-natural seasons and overcome the challenges of climate and agricultural difficulties in the region despite the war.
This agriculture also contributes to overcoming many problems such as soil poverty, and the lack of preparation of soil before agriculture, where agriculture can be on shelves or inside the pipes on a limited area, even in places not suitable for agriculture.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

SHOHOB Organization: A non-profit, non-profit development organization that is not affiliated with any political body
Building and developing the capacities of institutions, organizations and individuals through development programs that develop capacities and increase skills to meet current and future needs in accordance with high performance standards and work hard to provide opportunities.

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

- Building the capacity of engineers and agricultural technicians working in the most modern technologies to rationalize water consumption and aquaculture is a sustainable project.
- Providing job opportunities for the labor force in light of the scarcity of opportunities and the cost of living
- The recovery of the agricultural sector and the spread of interest to a large segment of people who depend on the agricultural sector as important life.

Geographic Focus

This targets the Syrian people in Idleb province, located North Syria in the Middle East,

How many months are required for the project idea? (500 characters)

The first stage should take no longer than 6 months. The first task would be to fund-raise money. During this stage, the first and most important phase of the project will be completed, which includes the construction and purchase of equipment, greenhouses and irrigation tanks.
Next we would have to discuss with local partnerships, such as agricultural institutions or local councils concerned, to examine the sustainability and financing the operational cost of the project.

Did you submit this idea to our 2017 BridgeBuilder Challenge? (Y/N)

Dear Lama,

I thank you for this great initiative. Being originally from Lebanon but living in Canada, I am highly affected by the fact that our wonderful climate there is not appreciated and given its full potential.

I have submitted an idea here titled Permanent Abundance. I see potential collaboration here as both our goals can be met if we merge our projects. We have acquired intensive knowledge in ecology, engineering, and permaculture that allows us to grow a huge amount of food, with close to no chores (needing few hours of care a month), and in a very small space. These methods are beyond organic practices (no pesticides, no fertilizers) and are far more sustainable than aquaponics. Easy to implement, fool-proof. This makes it very easy for people with no experience to implement and benefit from our beautiful and abundant nature. Kindly take time to review the Permanent Abundance project for more info. I'd be happy to share with you the knowledge if it is needed for your project in northern Syria.

Dear Hadi, Hello and Welcome, Nice to know you :)
I have seen your proposed project and let me thank you for your wonderful idea. We both clear about the goal and may disagree on the implementation mechanism.
I think that there are advantages that we may derive from partnership and benefit from the potential of the two parties, but I do not know if this is possible according to the conditions of #the challenge!
If that is possible, then we can talk about the mechanism of partnership and the distribution of tasks and other related matters.
Nice talking to you and wish you all the best.
LAMA
