In this initiative, community members who are interested in participating will sign up to share a meal with another person, couple, or family who also lives in their community.  The aim is to pair participants whose identities vary in some way.  The "differences" could be based on gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, race, ethnic background, socio-economic status, etc.

When two parties are matched by the organization, their match will be communicated to each of them and contact information will be shared.  The two parties will contact each other to plan their meal together.  The meal can take place at a public space, like a restaurant, or one party can host the other in their own home (recommended).  The parties should discuss any dietary restrictions and preferences but both should be open to trying something new.

If hosted at one's home, the host can be responsible for providing the meal or the parties can decide on a more potluck style meal where they both provide a part of the meal.  In addition, they could also choose for the first party to host and provide for their first meeting, and switch roles for the second meeting.

Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

The idea of bringing diverse people together to share a meal is meant to bridge the gap between the social constructs that keep us separated in our everyday lives. It's meant to connect people who are interested in making friends and connections with others in their community who they have not had the opportunity to get to know.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

The beneficiaries are anyone who participates in the project directly (by sharing a meal with someone else) and anyone who hears about the experience secondarily. The local community is also a beneficiary of improved relationships among its people.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

I know initiatives such as this do exist but they are not wide spread. This initiative would be more widely advertised initially, as well as the new friendships that result from this experience.

Idea Proposal Stage (choose one)

  • Initial Design: I am exploring the idea, gathering the inspiration and information I need to test it with real users.

Tell us more about your organization/company (1 sentence and website URL)

There is no existing organization attached to this idea currently. However, it could easily be implemented by religious organizations who are interested in cross-cultural, cross-religion relationship building.

Expertise in sector

  • 1-2 years

Organization Filing Status

  • Other

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

I, personally, would love to participate in this sort of initiative in my own community. I've taken part in experiences like this while traveling abroad with a local guide and had such a wonderful experience. I think it would be even more powerful to make connections within my own community that could persist into the future and also expand into our social networks.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

Tensions surrounding Peace and Prosperity are heavily influenced by the current administration and the racial, social, religious, etc. divides that are perpetuating in our current society. I believe 'good people' who want to build genuine relationships with others outnumber the racists, misogynists, etc. and this proposal would give us a better opportunity to band together, form stronger bonds, and create more positive change in our communities.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

As mentioned before, I believe religious organizations should be involved in this experience as well as people who are non-religious. Every single person should participate in a program like this.

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

One of the top strengths in the community is the vast diversity that already exists.

Geographic Focus

Anywhere, USA.

How many months are required for the project idea? (500 characters)

Ideally, this program would perpetuate into the future for as long as it is producing positive results. Even if the organization dissolves, the relationships forged by the program will hopefully continue on for years as well.

Did you submit this idea to our 2017 BridgeBuilder Challenge? (Y/N)

Hello!

I work with Our Workshop  in Cape Town, South Africa, and we have definitely discovered the importance of sharing food together, it creates such special moments and fed-bellies lend themselves well to creativity!!

I think you might find this collective interesting: http://peopleskitchencollective.com/
It might be nice to team up with someone who is already doing this and create a specific different stream of events or branch out to different places!
