Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)
Smart Chhori (Smart Daughter) is an initiative of Khalti digital wallet, which aims to empower girls and women in the sector of digital and financial literacy. The selected young girls aged 19-24 are provided with a training on money management, online safety, digital skills, soft skills and sales skills and are also provided with a flexible work opportunity to earn money using Digital Wallet. Our aim is to not only educate them and aware them on those skills, but to also provide them a platform where they can apply those learnings and become digitally and financially literate individuals.
Nepal is moving towards building smart cities which is not possible by only focusing on smart technologies and infrastructures. Smart cities are not just cities with high end technology and infrastructures but also equally smart and capable manpower who are well equipped and well skilled to manage those resources. With a country with 51% of female population, it is even more difficult to achieve that goal without including girls and women. So, we are trying to build a network of women change agents who can empower more women. Smart Chhori by Khalti is for driving financial Inclusion & digital literacy in Nepal which will help in empowering young girls and youths for developing local communities by creating jobs, developing entrepreneurs and bringing easy access to finance to all. As this is not just a training program, but a flexible work opportunity for girls using digital wallet & mobile money, we believe that they will be independent and grow themselves.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)
Our aim is to focus on economic empowerment through the use of mobile technology. In our country, there have been many workshops and training happening for youth and girls. However, these workshops and training are often short termed/sighted and are often theoretical. But Smart Chhori is not just a workshop but also a platform where they can use their learning from workshops and implement them to get real work experience. We believe providing them with a practice platform will help them to learn better as well as earn money in their journey. Smart Chhoris can not only learn about sales skills, online safety, digital skills and money management but also use those lessons and earn using our digital wallet where they can use their money management skills, sales skills and digital skills learned during the workshop.

Women in Nepal are still far behind when it comes to digital literacy and financial independence. Nepal already has a high female unemployment rate. Lacking digital skills has become one of the barriers for women and girls in enhancing their career. We see a lot of girls and women not getting the equal opportunities as men because of lack of skills in digital and financial sector. So, we saw the need to bridge the gap of e-skills by providing them skills development workshop and practice platform.
Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).
With the introduction of digital wallet, we are trying to promote digital payments and online transactions and hence, discouraging use of hard cash and payments. Online transactions will ultimately push down the use of printed vouchers, bills and other paper items and with the use of technology we are trying to promote Eco friendly method of payments and financial transactions. Smart chhoris will use the digital wallet to make payments and also aware and educate others to do the same thus making their life easier, making them Smart in their home. Moreover, they can also earn money using digital wallet and can make economic contribution to their family and community, hence making their life more prosperous.Smart chhori empowers girls and houses for prosperity and independence and also prevents domestic violence with girls/women which they often have to face when they are not able to earn money. This also prevents unsafe migration of girls abroad if they get the opportunity to earn here

To bring this project idea into reality, we are and will be partnering with local organizations who can facilitate the workshops on various skills development sessions. We have partnered with Samartha Nepal to provide money management skills to the girls and similarly, we have also partnered with Women in STEM and Google Business Group- Womenwill to provide training on online safety and digital skills. With these partnerships, we aim to equip girls with training on the critical skills that are required for today’s workforce.
In the pilot batch that we conducted on May, Samartha Nepal provided a basic training on money management to the girls who had just completed their school certificate and undergraduate students. Similarly, Women in STEM also provided them a training on online safety and social media where the same girls were taught about the do’s and don’ts of social media, staying secure online and other digital skills.
