The JUMP! Leadership Program is an idea that has been tested and iterated on for the past two years. We, The JUMP! Foundation, partner with other local youth-serving community based organisations to run year-long leadership programs that are human-centered and action-oriented. The program starts with a week long conference, where youth from a partner organisation's community come together in an openspaxce conference format to identify and discuss issues in their community that they see as pressing. Throughout the five day conference, participants are introduced to the human-centered design thinking process and work in teams to develop potential solutions to the different issues they identify at the beginning of the conference. These issues are framed in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in order for the participants to think globally while the create local action. In the middle of the conference participants spend one to two days off-site, in their communities, to interview different stakeholders to get a greater understanding of the problem, and to get feedback on their potential solution. After this the participants return to the conference site to develop a final prototype based on feedback from their community and from other conference participants. These solutions are presented as Community Impact Projects (CIPs) at the end of the conference, where two to three projects are picked to receive seed-funding and mentorship for them to implement their project over the next year. The following year the CIP winners are asked to come back to the conference to present both a Success Report and a Failure Report, to share their learnings with the next round of participants. The JUMP! Foundation currently runs the JUMP! Leadership Program with six partners in seven different countries spread out between Latin America, East Africa, Southeast Asia, and China.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

Most leadership programs that are available to youth take them out of their communities. In this model we bring the leadership program to the community so that what they are doing is not theoretical, it's practical. Most programs that provide seed-funding to projects are outcome oriented. This model is process oriented. While we hope for the success of their project, the real value is the youth going through the experience, without the pressure of a particular outcome. We see failure as an important step to creating innovative change makers. JUMP! is a global organization with an extensive network of partners which gives us access to a lot of social capital. However, we know that it's our partner organisations, who are based in these communities, that make these programs possible. We help to connect them with our global network, and help to develop capacity within the partner organization to eventually run this program on their own.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

Our founder was running a "traditional" leadership program at an international school in Beijing. Halfway through the program he identified that it wasn't going well and redesigned the program to reflect elements of an outdoor leadership programs he had been a part of. This experiential leadership model was a success and more schools began requesting it and paying. The founder identified that he could use income generated from this program to run programs for kids in underserved communities.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

Topic area 5 because while our leadership program includes elements of the three areas, it also includes elements of bridging global resources (funding, expertise, human power) and global initiatives (UN SDGs) with local expertise and young local change makers. Because of the fact that these programs let the youth develop impact projects for any issue that they see in their community, the projects are extremely diverse. The program equips participants with the skills needed to be social entrepreneurs, and a network to bring a global element to their work. Examples of Community Impact Projects that have come out of these programs include: Bridging access to education for rural youth in Cambodia. Bridging young migrant workers in Thailand to higher education through finance training. Bridging young farmers in rural Indonesia with social, financial, and capacity building support to help them succeed. Bridging urban migrant youth in Beijing with nutritionally balanced breakfasts.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

Global Potential trains youth in social entrepreneurship as a tool for community development. Global Potential works with youth in North America, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Nicaragua BEAM Education Foundation works to empower marginalised youth and adults with different forms non-formal education in Thailand and Myanmar. Green Umbrella provides both traditional and supplemental education to youth who's family are experiencing poverty outside of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Love & Hope Vocational Center is a Beijing-based non-profit devoted to migrant children and women from rural areas. The centre funds career-oriented courses. Desa Lestari works with rural communities in Yogyakarta, Indonesia to develop skills around civic engagement, entrepreneurialism, and self-empowerment. PaaMoja Initiative is Community Based Non-profit organization that empowers individuals from the second biggest slum in Kenya, Mathare, to acquire and practice life skills and access resources.

Resilience - With all of partner communities we work with populations who are doing ambitious and innovative work with minimal resources. Community Organizing - All of our partner organisations have a proven track record in organizing their communities and beneficiaries to promote community develop initiatives. Creativity - All of our partner organisations are willing to think outside of the box and try new approaches to bringing value to their communities.

Thanks for your project! I really enjoyed reading about the program, particularly about the adaptability of the program model to different contexts and the use of a local partner. I think empowering local populations, in collaboration with local institutions, to address local concerns is incredibly powerful. Are most of your partner organizations already connected to the school system? Are you partnering with universities, churches, community centers to build long-term support for the projects?

Hey James, thanks for your excitement! Yeah, we are a huge believer of the fact that local populations are the experts of their own experience and are therefor set up in the best way to create the solutions to the problems they face. All of our partners are embedded, community based organizations. That is the most important requirement for us in a partner. And most of them are already connected with universities and other like-minded organizations in their area. Does that answer your question?

Yes, it does, thank you. We have been doing similar work with community leaders and youth in Yemen. Our training focuses on conflict resolution but also culminates in CIPs. It's been a very effective counter-recruitment effort. Maybe we can make some contacts with folks there for you at some point?
