Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

Nigeria’s socioeconomic growth prospects has failed to reach its potential since independence. Citizens have historically voted along ethnic and religious lines, ignoring the most qualified candidate. My work centers on reorienting the mindset of individuals and cohorts about the inherent strength of diversity of tribes and religions and necessity of electing officials on quality of their proposed social contract with people and not language spoken, ensuring fortification of democratic structures in region and leading to sustainable development. Issue areas encompass Dialogue and Conflict Resolution, Citizen Participation and Governance in Africa. Anticipated problems include resistance from vested interests benefiting from existing state of affairs who employ methods such as weaponization of poverty to maintain the status quo.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

The beauty of my project is its absolutely scalable and replicable nature. My target audience therefore encompasses the student youth population of the universities in Nigeria such as the University of Port Harcourt, the persons in Nigeria who can vote and/or be voted for and potential drivers of change on the African Continent who can also vote or be voted for. It should be noted that since true development of a region or locality is usually not done in isolation, the domino effect of development in the African region is certain to affect other regions of the world.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

The innovation of this approach to addressing the governance and responsible followership deficit in Nigeria lies in the grassroots model of enthroning empathetic and democratic ideals especially in the highly impressionable youth population of the universities in Nigeria such as the University of Port Harcourt. My group is pleased to announce that it is in partnership with such organizations as the Obama Foundation whose stated mission is “to inspire and empower people to change their world” and whose early work with the “yes we can” movement and philosophy helped to elect the first black President of the United States of America, a feat many had hitherto thought to be impossible.

In 3-4 sentences, tell us the inspiration or story that encouraged you to start this project.

The founder of the Chiemeke Group conglomerate startup, Stephen, is a young man born in Nigeria in the mid-80s who lived a relatively sheltered life until being plunged into the vestiges of the lower class at the start of the Millennium due to social mobility. Going from getting PlayStation gifts to depending on government scholarships for basic needs as education befuddled him and he started to seek answers to such questions as inequality, inclusion and equal opportunities regardless of status.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

Our world is currently bedeviled by problems of a varied nature. From climate change to social and economic inequality to changes in the traditional family structure, the need for order has never been more apparent than at the present. My proposal for relative harmony involves the initiation of a dual-pronged strategy focused on socialization and the erection of societal institutions. Quality education is necessary for the propagation of such values as empathy, inclusion and equal opportunities regardless of gender, effectively negating ethnocentric tendencies and entrenching my tentatively tagged “Dualism Development Model” which recommends development initiatives that address the inherent needs of all parties involved and not using a one-size-fits-all approach, unwittingly subscribing to ethnocentric ideals. Since this model will only thrive in an environment of peace and justice, a sustained bolstering of every facet of the five pillars of society is crucial.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

Our work will be done via a thorough resocialization process with two organizations – the Catholic Graduate Students Fellowship, an advanced offshoot of the National Federation of Catholic Students and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. In the pilot stage orchestrated at the University of Port Harcourt, “Variety Thursdays”, a special fellowship organized by the Catholic Graduate Students Fellowship where academics hold discussions with students on varied topics was leveraged on. The latter organization which focuses on underserved community support will also serve as a platform for enthroning ideals of understanding and empathy among persons, regardless of tribe or religion via hospital visitations to the ill, implementation of development programs to mitigate effects of poverty as well as monitoring and evaluation visits to total institutions such as prisons. Our work will also be accentuated by partnerships with such organizations as the Obama Foundation.

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

The communities that we work and are in partnership with such as the Catholic Graduate Students Fellowship and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul consist of young men and women with an abundance of energy to effect positive change. We are thus socializing the new generation to constantly seek merit and excellence in the election and appointment of leaders, be aware of their civic duty of responsible followership as well as embrace dialogue and non-violence as a means to live in harmony.
