Why does the target community define this problem as urgent and/or a priority? How is the idea leveraging and empowering community assets to help create an environment for success? (1000 characters)

Firstly for environmental degradation, the target community equates this to droughts, drying of rivers and famine. Secondly this is closely followed by disrupted livelihoods, livestock migration to Mt Kenya Forest, human-wildlife conflicts, redundancy of employees and general resource scarcity. Thirdly they know that what follows environmental degradation and disrupted livelihoods are resource conflicts. These three issues are threats to their existence and they know it. How to forestall them is the difficult part. The 3Ps idea seeks to strengthen community institutions that could take care of the community assets that mainly suffer the tragedy of the commons phenomenon. This would be done through many old and new registered groups with their projects that will cascade to individual households.

How does the idea fit within the larger ecosystem that surrounds it? Urgent needs are usually a symptom of a larger issue that rests within multiple interrelated symptoms - share what you know about the context surrounding the problem you are aiming to solve. (500 characters)

We envision starting with building strong actor-actor empathetic communication bridges and projects in our sub-system. This will involve lower and middle level staff including government agencies and officials. We shall also invite policy makers to open workshops and visit our projects. They could easily adapt ideas that work and hence fund similar 3Ps groups.

How does the idea affect or change the fundamental nature of the larger ecosystem that surrounds it (as described above) in a new and/or far-reaching way? (500 characters)

Many practitioners in 3Ps sectors eschew working together. Actors in different departments of the same organization have similar challenges. This is probably the main reason why we have failed to solve the 3Ps challenges. Our idea uses generalists’ knowledge and experiences that straddle the 3Ps, leading to synergistic effects. The success of our idea would therefore trickle up and across to affect the larger ecosystem where conventional wisdom of working separately rules.

What will be different within the target community as a result of implementing the idea? What is the scope and scale of that difference? How long will it take to see that difference and how will it be sustained beyond BridgeBuilder support? (500 characters)

The target community will be more organized, their mindset will focus more on 3Ps, will have more tangible projects done by themselves and backed by us. The project will cover a portion of the river basin and work through community groups. We expect to see some effects in 1 year. The 3Ps movement uses participatory processes that, fused with economic, environmental and social issues, make the projects have self-propagating mechanisms.

How has the idea evolved or responded to your user research during the Beneficiary Feedback Phase and any further insights provided if you participated in the Expert Feedback Phase? (1000 characters)

SEANET visited 15 groups, 6 at their places of work, 2 in Camp Mahon and leaders for 7 groups in Nanyuki Town. These included 2 from Water Resource Users Associations. Lessons learnt from our user research and will be included in our idea comprise the following: Chiefs are excluded in many Planet and prosperity projects whose effects might spawn conflicts; Irrigation farmers increase crop acreage in rainy seasons thus increasing further abstraction of water during droughts; Projects are usually top-down and many die after the donor leaves; River water pollution from Nanyuki town upstream and large farms is a big issue. We noted very high levels of poverty, inorganic group development and leadership skills missing, rural-urban migration to slums because of youth joblessness is rampant. Start off capital for small businesses is hard to come by. The information acquired will be used to upgrade our idea.

On our timeline, our emphasis is on action by beneficiaries to ensure successful outcome. Action is always the hardest part in any project implementation.

Board of Management - Overall policy direction and strategy of SEANET Executive Director - Oversees design, marketing, promotion of delivery and quality of programs and services. Will direct implementation and coordination of 3Ps idea. What aspects of the idea would potential BridgeBuilder funds primarily support? (500 characters)

The funds will be used for: • Capacity building • Vehicle / Mileage allowance/Transport hire • Training and office equipment • Tools and equipment for small and medium enterprises start off. • Remuneration and other benefits for staff. • Full board accommodation for workshop participants. • Field days/open days/awareness and performance reviews.

In preparation for our Expert Feedback Phase: What are three unanswered questions or challenges that you could use support on in your project? These questions will be answered directly by experts matched specifically to your idea and needs.

- In the course of our interactions with actors in 3Ps beneficiary feedback phase, SEANET observed weak communication linkages between actors at county, sub-county and low level. How can such linkages be strengthened? - Due to economic hardships in developing countries, we have learnt that most youth desire to migrate to Europe and America for better lives. Most of the Western world does not subscribe to immigration because it disrupts their economic and social order. How can the Western world help to reduce the urge of our youth to migrate to the West? - While visiting the beneficiaries, the SEANET team noted that the project area is occupied by several ethnic communities including Maasai, Kikuyu, Meru, Samburu, Turkana, Pokot, Somali etc. Some of them can only communicate in their mother tongue and are semi/illiterate. We therefore noted that we shall have a challenge of making user journey maps in many languages. What would be your advice on this?

We learnt from beneficiaries that they are least consulted by their project actors and hence many of their projects fail. We reassured them of their real participation from planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation and celebration. Our team noted a clearer connection between the intersections of conflicts, environmental degradation and poverty and the intersections of peace, planet and prosperity hence adopting through the Venn diagram. We have designed a ‘Bridge Building Appraisal’ (BBA) tool to be used to subjectively assess empathetic communication between actors. This was triggered by IDEO Bridge Builder coaches, experts, teams and references.

One of the biggest bottlenecks of planet, peace and prosperity challenges lays in the larger ecosystem comprising civil societies, business sector and government bureaucracies. Here the absence of good intra and inter key actor-actor linkages (bridges) is the rule, for many possible reasons. I think this is the elephant in the room! We have refined our simple Bridge-Building Appraisal (BBA) Tool that we shall use to assess the key actor-actor interfaces to establish empathetic information flow status with a view to improving it. Please see the BBA Tool below. Using our BBA tool we are actively reaching out to the relevant actors, starting with the low-hanging fruits. We have already done well with some chiefs and churches. Progressively we shall build bridges with those higher up especially in government, when we have something tangible to practically show because many can only go by what they can see. We shall again do stakeholder analysis to spot those who can work with us on the 3Ps. In this way there is a possibility of other actors appreciating our approach, there by expanding their programs using our ideas that work. This includes the county and the national governments. BRIDGE-BUILDING APPRAISAL (BBA) TOOL: We wish to introduce our Bridge-Building Appraisal (BBA) Tool that would make implementation of 3Ps Movement easier, at the intricate intersections of Planet, Peace and prosperity. This instrument would make it easier for us to subjectively test existence of bridges or lack of them. It would also test the weaknesses and strengths with a view to building or repairing them, at any level or direction among people, issues and beliefs in order to promote meaningful engagement, greater social cohesion and sustainable community-led change. Administering of testing questions to parties of the linkage/bridge is easy as shown in the diagram above. We have earlier established that horizontal linkages can be very strong. Vertical bridges are usually very weak or lacking and this worsens as you climb up in e.g. the bureaucratic ladder. The BBA tool measures empathetic communication .This means that it assesses information flow and understanding between relevant actors with a view to having a basis for initiating or strengthening the actor-actor linkage/bridge. The same tool would be used for monitoring and evaluation of the same bridges later. Borrowing from an Agriculture Knowledge and Information System (AKIS) and replacing ‘’Agriculture’’ with ‘’Actors’’, we can view empathetic communication as follows: If information flow between two actors is negative, probably there is propaganda flying around, there is cold war or even war. If information flow is • 0, it means exchanging of understanding does not exist. • 1-way, it means there is some understanding and the Bridge is weak. • 2 -way, it means mutual understanding is good and the bridge is strong. • Formal it implies that some understanding exists but the bridge is weak. • Informal it means that mutual understanding is good and the bridge is strong. The above could be combined in various ways. But, •The most challenging situation is when communication is negative. This means that perhaps propaganda is flying around and possibly even some cold war. •The best communication occurs when information is 2-way and informal and therefore the bridge is very strong. This could perhaps be found among people e.g. some former classmates who might maintain so much closeness throughout their lives, all things remaining the same. This is the type of bridge that we aspire to pursue on our journey towards the North Star.

Having interacted with the beneficiaries, coaches and experts in different platforms, we have improved and modified our idea by editing the response to ‘How does the idea fit within the larger ecosystem that surrounds it?’. It clarifies on how the various actors may interact. We have also designed the ‘Bridge Builder Appraisal’ (BBA) Tool to be able to assess existence/strengths of bridges at the interfaces of 3Ps actors, horizontally or vertically. This gives us a base from which we can act.

Explain your project idea (2,000 characters)

The Peace, Planet and Prosperity (3Ps) project idea visualizes poverty, environmental degradation, need and resource conflicts in Ewaso Ngiro River basin as subsystems of one system. Each (subsystem) has multiple causes. Addressing a single cause leads to an effect on the subsystem, while the subsystem affects the system. Each subsystem has multiple root causes that also interact. We shall use systems approach to address these complexities. Linking peace, planet and prosperity and addressing the root causes of each concurrently treats the system synergistically. SEANET has established Camp Mahon Gardens as an incubation center. It includes social businesses of multi-disciplinary best practices that mimic conservation in situ. The center will help participants to establish organized 3Ps movements. It will then act as a hub of the network to be backstopping them as need arises. The project idea will use the established facilities at the camp to capacity build participants on environmental conservation, conflict prevention, management and resolution, food value addition and entrepreneurial semi-skills for (self) employment and group development. Participants are recruited and capacity built in the camp. After the workshop they leave to practically form 3Ps groups or if they are already formed they will adapt the 3Ps philosophy. The participants will learn and adapt the best practices established in the camp. For each vice they will be assisted to make their problem and objective tree analysis trees. They will be shown how to prioritize causes so as to have doable activities in their action plans. The clubs and groups would then be commissioned. They would network with other parties of the basin. School clubs would be weaned and through their activities continue networking while still performing their mandates after completing school.

Who are the beneficiaries? (1,000 characters)

Our beneficiaries are: (i) Students in poor day secondary schools (ii) Groups of school leavers and other jobless youths (iii) Teachers and officials from the Interior Security Ministry especially chiefs and assistants. (iv) Religious group leaders. How will they benefit from your idea? All will be equipped with packages of value addition, entrepreneurial and innovation semi-skills and group/club organization that are backed by environmental best practices and social justice. Manuals that will be handy for the relevant workshop participants will be produced for them. This will make these benefits sustainable to the participants, to the society and the planet, now and in the future. The offshoot of all these activities would be diversification of economic activities that will lead to reduced pressure on the resources, leading to environmental regeneration, more peace and still more prosperity. This could lead to similar programs in other river basins in Kenya and elsewhere.

How is your idea unique? (1,000 characters)

Our idea is unique in the sense that: It already has Camp Mahon as a case study. It also has many aspects of which the participants will see, touch, experience and study. Most approaches are reductionist and isolative when addressing problematic situations while ours uses systems approaches. Nascent 3Ps Movements will emerge from the camp. In future the members of the 3Ps Movement will be holding symposiums at the camp to showcase their achievements and for support. Our unique advantages include: Backing by a passionate board of management. It has been immersed into doing this for over a decade. It is a recognized name in this endeavor. It has turned the idea from theory to practical and lives it. Our social business model policy when we are fully functional is: Those able to pay do so according to the prevailing market prices. Those that can only partly pay are subsidized while those that lack come for free. These attributes largely ensure social and financial sustainability.

While building classrooms in 5 schools between 2006 to 2009, we learnt that the students never appreciated them. On enquiring, they informed us that the education they received was theoretical and would just lead them to poverty and joblessness. I became empathetic immediately and decided to do something about it, then and forever. I immediately conceived the eGardens and cottage food industries model for schools that has to date evolved into Camp Mahon Gardens social business model.

Please explain how your selected topic areas are influenced, in the local context of your project (1,000 characters).

The project is set in the Ewaso Ngiro River Basin. During drought, water, pasture and food are scarce. The upper basin is occupied by small-scale and horticultural farmers. Water upstream is over-abstracted, riparian land cleared while the Mt. Kenya forest is deforested, leading to intra water resource conflicts. The lower zone is occupied by the pastoralists and the ranchers. During drought, violent intra water and pasture conflicts ensue. Animals trek towards Mt Kenya, upper zone, causing damage to crops and environment on their way causing inter zone conflicts. In both zones, the jobless poach on natural resources, resulting in more deforestation and land degradation. Others are vulnerable to joining criminal gangs including Alshabab hence disrupting peace. These vagaries of environmental degradation, joblessness intertwined with intra and inter upper and lower basin conflicts are at their all-time high. This is the context in which the 3Ps Movement is set.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

Our partners and stakeholders are the school boards of management who are responsible of school policies and management, the Parents Teachers Association that guides the boards on the student needs. The clubs that are the contact points through which the rest of student population is accessed. Others include the Ministry of Education that guides on education policies, Agriculture that promotes food security and the Internal Security Ministry that is responsible of keeping peace and order. Others comprise the Water Resource Management Authority that controls water use, the Water Resource Users Associations that represents the interests of all users of a given water resource, National Environment Management Authority and other relevant government agencies. This process of engagement will ensure project ownership and support, thereby ensuring the needed synergy and sustainability.

Please share some of the top strengths identified in the community which your project will serve (500 characters)

Youth and their parents are enthusiastic about learning value addition and entrepreneurial skills. Local entrepreneurs are ready to offer insight of their businesses whenever they are approached to allow participants to visit. The community is eager to learn about various plant and wildlife species and their conservation in the gardens of Camp Mahon. Majority of them are keen to resolve, manage and prevent conflicts but they lack the requisite know-how to do so.

The project idea requires 24 months. First 6 months are for baseline survey, logistics, creating awareness and training manuals, selection of partners and signing MOUs. Second 6 months are for developing training manuals, training of trainers, other groups and clubs at 40 participants per training. The last 12 months are for continuing training, holding field days for the trained and participatory monitoring and evaluation. All groups will have action plans.

Incredibly project! How do you keep your young people engaged and motivated? One of the communities' that we work with most active leaders are young people. Nevertheless, I believe the are currently experiencing fatigue. Have you experienced this before?
