The social innovation box is the result of 5 years working ON THE FIELD with non-profit organizations and social entrepreneurs around the world. With a holistic approach (Mind, Soul and Body) we aim to maximize efforts and impact of social initiatives with the help of a friendly, easy-to use and POWERFUL tool-box.

We are convinced that inequality, globalization and digitalization can affect NGOs, mostly in non-developed countries, which have limited access to technology, resources and innovation.

We aim to build a bridge that closes this gap by providing knowledge, resources, tools and real experience to NGOs and social initiatives in a friendly and easy to use way.

Social Innovation Box gives everyone the chance to explore solutions and make a positive impact in the world.

Case study: Living Positive Kenya (LPK) is a Community Based Organization aiming to support women and their kids infected and affected by HIV and AIDS.  It is formed by 20 members located in Ngong, Kenya.

LPK has 3 main projects running: 1. Women empowerment and skills development program (WEEP), 2. Day-care center for children, 3. A farm as part of its micro-financial support to the WEEP.

Most of the time and effort are invested in managing donors and volunteers, thus there is not sufficient time to focus on the improvement and development of the current programs. Furthermore, LPK would like to become economically more independent, self-sustainable and build income generators through the WEEP program.

In 1 month, with the use of the Social Innovation Box, we were able to re-encounter the core values of LPK by analyzing the evolution of their outcomes in the last 5 years and the personal commitment of each member. We started to build a strategy to focus on a strong income generator linked with the WEEP program. The result was the installment of a chicken supply business as well a small factory to produce pillows and school uniforms. We also built a better and more automatize volunteer management system by introducing a common agenda covering the whole state of the volunteer including a set training before the actual arrival, the system is based in a win-win relationship which actually fulfills volunteer expectations.

We built an achievements board using gamification that keeps track of their monthly goals and sets prioritization of the tasks needed, leaving time for general meetings like evaluation of results.

Outcome of the Social Innovation Box in Living Positive Kenya (On site): Income generator, more self-sustainable NGO, Better work-life balance, improvement of their WEEP program, efficient volunteer management and recovery of their main mission.

Explain your idea

Developing, trying, failing and trying again allowed us to understand the challenges of launching and running social projects, furthermore we found that resources and technology are inaccessible or unaffordable to most social initiatives. The idea of the Social Innovation Box came up in 2015 when we realized a solution was needed to match countless good intentions around the world with efficient, accessible, affordable and practical tools to make those intentions possible, furthermore provide a holistic approach to the most common challenges of persons addressing social challenges. We use the power of design thinking to build a scalable solution that proves it´s worth. We deliver the box by: 1. Post.- Requested through a well designed form, personalized and tailored to the user needs and send it by post with online or phone support, 2. Applied on site in 1 month transformation program. 3. On training and educational programs specialized for NGOs, social entrepreneurs, professors and students of Social Innovation and International Development. Challenges are the same in China, Austria, Rwanda or Mexico when it comes to build a social project. Every project face similar struggles on the way to survive, validate, escalate and innovate, thus there are not enough accessible resources for all of them.

Who Benefits?

2 years providing the box and working with small, middle and big NGOs and social entrepreneurs in more than 8 countries around the world, allow us to support their daily challenges and provide them easy-to use solutions in a tool-box. Rwanda. A small social enterprise providing books to increase literacy in the country that wants to incorporate technology for productivity. Kenya. A middle size NGO that supports women and kids with HIV and AIDS looking to become more independent by building new income generators. Costa Rica: A social entrepreneur building a market place for women´s empowerment and looking for the best workflow possible to maximize the logistics. Vietnam: A small social enterprise recovering the economy of a small community by commercializing its local handicrafts and looking to incorporate task management to farmers where the internet is inaccessible. India: A local leader trying to bring volunteers to his village and looking for new ways to approach.

How is your idea unique?

Tools, resources, ideas, motivators, practical knowledge and real experience are unaccessible and unaffordable for small NGOs & social entrepreneurs. Through our Social Innovation Box we unlock in a friendly way the most useful resources used by companies, entrepreneurs, successful NGOs and turn them into posters, guides, post it, cases, games, with the use of design thinking and gamification We are convinced that 90% of the real social innovators in the world are unknown, they are the ones providing great solutions to real challenges every day. If we can provide them affordable and easy-to-use tools to escalate and innovate we will be able to address urgent global challenges at the intersections of peace, prosperity, and planet in radically new ways Every Social Innovation Box is unique and tailored according with the user needs. After request through a well designed form, we study and prepare every box to the user, producing up to 10 boxes weekly, which makes our solution the BEST

Idea Proposal Stage

  • Full-scale roll-out: I have completed a pilot and analyzed the impact of that pilot on the users I am trying to reach with my idea. I am ready to expand the pilot significantly.

Tell us more about you

Social Innovation Box is developed by Social Innovation Hub. We are a small non-profit organization aiming to inspire, connect and empower social initiatives around the world. Social Innovation Hub was established officially in 2016, however since 2012 it has been part of the social impact and english programs of Latinomics International ( an organization providing leadership experiences abroad for Latin American countries. We decided to split Latinomics and start Social Innovation Hub due to the increasing demand of NGOs looking for support, and focus more professionally in our work with social initiatives ON the field. The box itself has been used by 18 projects during 2016 and 2017. However, we have been applying, developing and using the methodology and the tools since 2012 when Latinomics started to incorporate volunteer and internship programs in small NGOs. In 2016 Social Innovation Box was granted with "The Latin American Leadership Award 2016" by Latinomics and Moneda Blanca as part of their main tool used by 25 leaders participating in the Latin America Leadership Summit 2016. In 2017 Social Innovation Hub interventions in NGOs was recognized by the Regional Academy of the United Nations for the outstanding results: "Fascinating!, no doubt the best formula to redesign the way we tackle modern social challenges and interventions”. Our revenue model: We currently have our box on sale and are looking for sponsors who want to provide the box to other NGOs. Additionally, we sell the box during trainings and educational projects in universities, schools and consulting firms. Our plan for the following year: Make the box more accessible, introduce a set of video-guides, thus facilitating the auto-use of the box. Plan for the next 2 years: Build a cloud and desk platform that will allow small NGOs to manage their organizations and receive feedback from others. Plan for the next 3 up to 5 years: Incorporate blockchain and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the NGO sector. Our main current challenge is the escalation of our solutions and a more efficient approach to our beneficiaries. About our director: With 8 years of entrepreneurship experience, 2 as professor and 2 as mentor and consultant, Roberto Arrucha, Director, is a mix of constant creativity, brutal honesty, contagious passion and results driven person. Our offices are based in Vienna, Austria due to our workshops and trainings conducted in the UN Vienna HQ during summer. During winter, we go to the field to work in developing countries, communities and social initiatives. I think this is a great idea as it reduces the need to hire consultants to help brainstorm and uncover how to solve an existing problem. I am currently consulting for a not for profit as part of a uni subject and I can see how this would help Not for Profits as most do not have any business background or any idea on where to start on how to solve their organisation's problems.

I would just like to clarify if this box is for free or if there is a pricing scheme. I am a student and I feel like there are student organisations or budding social entrepreneurs who need guidance but may not be able to afford the Social Box (if there is a charge). Would you consider sponsoring students in a Social Box scholarship of some sort?

Thanks for your comment.
We do sell the box, it costs 150 Euros. It´s affordable even if you are a student.
We would love to sponsor as many as we can, that´s the purpose to submit the idea here.
