WE ARE A GERMAN NGO THAT OPERATES WHERE OTHERS FEAR TO GO. OUR MISSION TAKES US INTO THE DONBASS CONFLICT ZONE. THERE WE EVACUATE PEOPLE FROM COMBAT ZONES SHELLED DAILY TO SECURE, SAFE HOUSING OUTSIDE THE PRIMARY ZONE OF DEATH.

Explain your idea

IN THE DONETSK METRO CITY OF ROUGHLY 800,000 PEOPLE THERE ARE TENS OF THOUSANDS SHELLED DAILY. CHILDREN, ELDERLY AND CIVILLIANS ALIKE, ARTILLERY DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE IN WHO IT HARMS. FBKO MOVES THESE PEOPLE AWAY FROM THE DANGER AND SUSTAINS THEM WITH FOOD, SHELTER AND TRANSPORTATION. WE PROVIDE 2 MONTHS HOUSING, FOOD AND TRANSPORTATION TO RECIPIENT FAMILIES AT A COST OF $330. PER FAMILY RELOCATED FROM THE DEATH ZONE.

Who Benefits?

OUR CLIENTS ARE CIVILLIAN FAMILIES IN THE DONBASS REGION OF THE FORMER UKRAINE. WE GET THEM OUT OF THE KILL ZONE OF ARTILLERY AND SUPPORT THEM WITH SHELTER, FOOD AND TRANSPORTATION LOCALLY. MANY CAN NOT HELP THEMSELVES. IN ONE NEIGHBORHOOD WE HAVE ABOUT 50 PEOPLE WHO HAVE LOST LIMBS FROM THE SHELLING THAT NEED EVACUATION ALONE. WE PROVIDE ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER BREATH, ANOTHER CHANCE AT LIFE FOR THIS REGION'S MOST VULNERABLE PEOPLE.

How is your idea unique?

WE RISK OUR OWN LIVES DAILY TO GO INTO THE DEATH ZONES AND MEET WITH OUR CLIENTS. OUR UNIQUE ADVANTAGE IS WE WORK IN AN AREA THE UN AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL AID AGENCIES AVOID. OUR CONTACTS WITH GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, LOCAL AID GROUPS AND MEDIA HERE ALLOW US THE ABILITY TO ACCOMPLISH MUCH MORE THAN MAJOR INTERNATIONAL AID GROUPS UNWILLING TO COME TO DONBASS AND HELP SAVE LIVES NOW. WE KNOW WE ARE SUCCESSFUL AND DOCUMENT IT DAILY ON OUR WEB SITE http://www.fbko.org/ru AND FACEBOOK PAGE https://www.facebook.com/groups/919175894812340/

Idea Proposal Stage

  • Full-scale roll-out: I have completed a pilot and analyzed the impact of that pilot on the users I am trying to reach with my idea. I am ready to expand the pilot significantly.

Hi David!
Thank you for sharing the work that the FBKO is doing. What are the next steps for your project in terms of the number of people you want to reach out to next, how much funding, additional resources (people and supplies) you would need? After the two months of funding, what happens to the families?

My job is not fun. Donetsk is a city of 800,000 that has been bombed, attacked and shelled for 3 years. The city has over 5000 people in the Kiev district of Donetsk it would like to evacuate to interior safe areas out of the death zone. If we were to have access to what is truly needed with an evacuation of at least 20,000 persons and 10,000 at risk kids we are pushing at $10 million USD in emergency funding. We would need expanded support of 100 local and 10 western humanitarian workers. Some of this could be volunteers, but being safe we need $10,000 a month on overhead. After two months we hope the situation stabalizes and a real peace is established. However, we are trying to do what we can now to get people to safety as shelling and fighting does take place daily. We hope the UN and other NGOs step in, but there is no sign of this happening currently. After two months we hope clients can return to their homes. We plan on looking at a repair and rebuilding campaign also, more twoards summer as over 8000 homes in the metro area have been destroyed thus far. I should mention we will continue to fund raise and sustain our clients, we do not intend to abandon people who depend on us for survival.

Hi David, it sounds like you are doing some incredibly important work. Thank you for your thoughtful follow-up! Two additional questions I had: 1) can you share a few more details about the services you provided for your pilot? and 2) How are you currently tracking impact?

Sadly we could not get funding to go forward with the project. Since the time we tried to start evacuation of people on the West side of Donetsk in the Kievsky district, a number have been killed in artillery strikes waiting for help. FBKO was unable to secure $330 per client and made an executive decision to focus instead on distributing food, clothing and medicines with the limited funds they had. Last night a 75 year old man was killed in the areas we were working as a tank round landed in his kitchen. The war in Donbass remains an unknown war in the West. This lack of awareness leads to a lack of support, unfortunately leading to deaths. I will post a few video reports from this neighborhood we were working. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T9a-gJFDWQ

David, I am so sorry to hear this. Thank you for sharing your work and what's currently happening in Donetsk. Even though you did not receive funding are you still planning to move forward with this proposal around other support services?
